By now you will have seen that we are fans of The Margaret Hooligans, we recently covered Red Rider and Fat Tongue, so we couldn’t wait to listen to their latest release, Pete and Roger!

Establishing the mood with textured drums and vibrant industrial-style electric guitar, before building with cymbals and melody, The Margaret Hooligans open Pete and Roger with intrigue and dimensionality.

The opus expands with the situational and empowering lyrics, “They met in school, nobody’s fool, they made a bet… To smash the city, crush the country, plans were set…”, as The Margaret Hooligans deliver the ultimate tribute song to their favourite band, The Who.

The meaningful and intelligently constructed composition salutes Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey by retelling the tale of their start and their tumultuous but long-standing friendship.

We appreciate the insight into music history though the medium of music itself, how meta! Lyrical highlights include the industry reference, “No A&R scouts, for Elvis they were not…”, the iconic “Woodstock is stoked, won’t go broke, rock opera wizards they ruled the day…” and the hook, “Those kids were alright, Pete and Roger…”

The journey that The Margaret Hooligans take us on is vibrant and full of detail, and we are grateful for the history lesson! With regards to the creation of Pete and Roger, Meg and Strontium carefully selected the parts of what made The Who songs great with “explosive drumming, rhythmic ukulele riffs, melodic leads, and layered vocal harmonies”.

Reflections can be seen in Meg’s soaring vocals and ukulele riffs, which echo the genius of The Who. Pete and Roger is the fifth single from The Margaret Hooligans‘ upcoming album, Turntable Tribulations, due out in October! The track was recorded in the basement of Piety Street Publishing, mixed and mastered by Jon Huxtable of Smallfish Recordings, and was produced by Mr. Strontium.

We have added Pete and Roger to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of The Margaret Hooligans!

We recently featured The Margaret Hooligans for their powerful and evocative single Red Rider, so we were thrilled to hear that they had just released the brand new, Fat Tongue.

Immersing us with a cymbal clash and rolling drums, we immediately remember why we first fell in love with The Margaret Hooligans! Fat Tongue opens with the wise lyrics, “I think we’ve got a problem, I think I know the cause, there’s a river of nonsense and I think I’ve found its source…”

We love the profound vision that the duo has, everything they create has intricate detail in sound, vision and concept and Fat Tongue is another piece of brilliantly captivating artistry.

Expanding into a percussive soundscape with thought-provoking hybrid spoken word vocals from Meg Cratty with visceral add libs, Fat Tongue dimensionalizes and becomes three songs rolled into one.

Moving on from the soft shoe approach, where the duo acknowledges that there is a problem and source, the intro gives way to a rock and roll middle section which is dynamic and full of instrumentation including the iconic ukulele and bold electric guitar. The final segment of the song strips back again to cement the message of the opus.

Fat Tongue was recorded in the basement of Piety Street Publishing, mixed and mastered by Jon Huxtable of Smallfish Recordings, and was produced by Mr. Strontium.

It is the fourth single from The Margaret Hooligans‘ upcoming album, Turntable Tribulations, due out in October! In the meantime, we have added Fat Tongue to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream The Margaret Hooligans‘ wider discography!

Establishing the mood with a subversive and vibrant electric guitar riff, The Margaret Hooligans open their single, Red Rider with the conceptual and situational lyrics, “They said you weren’t to be trusted, I just laughed and handed you my things, and I was warned but took no heed, and now I am sorry oh so sorry…”

Red Rider expands to deliver an alternative rock meets grunge-folk hybrid soundscape, and reinterpretation of the much loved Red Riding Hood fairytale.

In a high concept manner, the lyrics also reveal an allegory for the last few years we’ve been living through. We appreciate the intricate guitar and drum-work from the rising band from Bala Cynwyd, and are in awe of the details of the unique electric ukulele.

The middle of the song lends itself to a breakdown and more experimental nature, rich with fantasy and featuring vocalist Meg’s iconic vocals, with crashing symbols, clanging cowbells, pounding djembe and ukulele. We are in awe of the unique instrumentation used, which really sets Red Rider apart, in terms of originality.

Lyrical highlights include the vulnerable, “Can no one cheer me, I was on a merry go round, I was crawling around…”, and the assertive and empowering, “Don’t need you sniffing around my door, those wolf eyes won’t work on me no more…”

Red Rider also comes with a cinematic and ethereal music video, set in the woods, featuring our protagonists delivering an epic performance and truly embodying the iconic fairy tale character, along with the full moon and even a wolf!

The opus is the third single from The Margaret Hooligans‘ upcoming sophomore album, Turntable Tribulations, due out in October and is produced by Mr. Strontium with mixing and mastering by Jon Huxtable of Smallfish Recordings.

We have added Red Rider to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream The Margaret Hooligans‘ wider discography and anticipate Turntable Tribulations!
