Establishing the mood with a subtle Latin pop energy with bossa nova and rock influences, Banquet Darling open The Getaway with dimensionality and charm, before expanding with a more subversive guitar-driven vibe.

The opus evolves with shooting textures and a captivating vocal performance to take us on a cerebral journey of escapism. We love the genre expansive energy and the brilliantly written prose. It feels like there is a nod to Brit-pop from the Australian artist, and the pizazz that the entire track is performed with is nothing short of hypnotic.

There are also psychedelic elements to come to life with the composition which manifest in a highly dynamic way. This also manifests in the vibrant accompanying self-directed music video, edited by Callum Padgham. Speaking on the release, Banquet Darling confesses, “The Getaway is a playful exploration into the need for escapism; be it from people, place or one’s own mind.”

It is like the track taps into the sentiment of feeling scattered and misunderstood, when we crave escape and spiritual cleansing whilst shedding old identities and relationships. The concept of The Getaway is both literal and cosmic – running toward rebirth, belief and of course, a freer version of the self.

We learn that Banquet Darling is the musical brainchild of the Muloobinba/Newcastle artist Todd Kilby. The project was forged after years touring the world as a circus acrobat, musician and director, writing songs everywhere from Paris to Hong Kong.
