Our obsession with The Amanda Emblem Experiment seems to grow with every listen. We previously featured the upbeat, heartfelt, and relatable song, Storm in my Life, and the spiritually empowering single and EP, Power of One, so naturally, when we heard that The Amanda Emblem Experiment was back with an intentional track called Ancient Dingo, we were curious and couldn’t wait to explore and share our experience.

Drawing us in with a luscious and emotive guitar soundscape with textured drums and an astral blues harp, The Amanda Emblem Experiment opens Ancient Dingo with situational prose about the lived experience of the dingo, as Amanda sings, “In the wild chaotic order, howling in the night, a changing evolution, a hand that feeds the bite, grateful for what’s on offer, surviving on what’s left over, dependent on the scraps…”

This paints a vivid reality of how dingos exist in Australia. We immediately connect with the high emotional quotient of the song, and the message that Amanda shares as she tells us, “Dingos are uniquely Australian and very misunderstood. Mostly they get bad press because of negative confrontations with humans. They are wild animals and should be treated as such… but they can also be appreciated for their resilience and history.”

Ancient Dingo feels like an educational song that could be played in schools, and we appreciate that there is also a stripped-back acoustic version of the track with guitar and harp. This version is further amplified by a didgeridoo which adds spiritual depth to the track.

We learn that Ancient Dingo is co-written by Amanda Emblem and Kelly King. The song also comes with a cinematic music video which shows the dingo existing in peace and also shining a light on their connection with humans. It feels quite shamanic and really allows us to connect with the spirit of the dingo.

Amanda Emblem is a Queensland-based singer, songwriter and performer from Upper Kandanga. She has a career spanning more than 20 years, and has toured internationally, sharing stages with legendary rock and blues artists including Kiss, Aerosmith and Robert Cray. Her original songs have earned international awards, appeared on the television series Neighbours, and continue to receive regular airplay around the world.

“You are the storm in my life, the danger feels so damn right, pressure drops when you’re away, it’s a sad but sunny day, waiting for lightning to strike” sings The Amanda Emblem Experiment as she opens Storm in my Life with a vibrant, American soundscape featuring guitar, textured drums and harmonica.

We are immediately enthralled the authenticity that Amanda exudes, her brand of storytelling, situational and metaphorical – raw and cinematic. There is no doubt that Storm in my Life would be perfect for a major Hollywood synch deal – perhaps a romantic comedy.

The tempo shift adds dimensionality for the finale – and actually reminds us a lot of early Bob Dylan! Speaking philosophically on the release, Amanda says, “Many of the things we crave (or are attracted to) are not necessarily good for us. For example; I love it when we get flooded in at the farm. I get totally excited for no good reason. I’m not totally fond of the continually rainy weather creating these conditions, but when the creek floods and the water rises there is an excitement that is unexplainable. I know I’m not alone. Humans thrive on drama. We are just waiting on the next instalment.”

With reference to the song, she adds, “Which brings me to the first chosen single Storm in My Life which is a love song… kind of. I love performing it. It’s snappy & upbeat and I get to show off my fingerpicking skills, something I’ve been developing since the great lockdown. The storyline is quite innocently laden with metaphors, comparing a romantic relationship to bad weather.”

Now, we can read into this as much as we feel is appropriate, but there are connotations of a toxic relationship at play, but also the mundanity of a long term relationship which is built on struggles. It can be perceived in a multitude of ways, just like the weather!

The opus is being released via Wild Weather Records, and is taken from her upcoming 11-track album The Wood. Alongside Amanda Emblem on vocals and guitar, the track features Kelly King (flute, harmonica, vocals), Billy Adams (drums, vocals), and Scott Astill (bass, guitar, vocals). Amanda, who’s released over 35 titles, has won multiple awards including Best Folk Artist and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Midnight Records!
