From a pop culture standpoint it all started in 2011 when Gaga wore vintage Gianni Versace in the video for Edge of Glory. In spite of Cathy Horyn’s completely unnecessary feedback on the outfit stating that “she looked embalmed”; she in fact looked incredible. It was the first time in her entire video history where she had maintained one and only one look. It worked. Especially considering the creative treatment for the actual video was subject to a last minute drop out from Joseph Khan as the director and therefore a complete re-haul and strip down of the concept.

This first joining of Versace and Gaga subsequently transitioned into what can only be described as a beautiful friendship between two powerful and independent Italian women. I must have said and thought a thousand times that a creative venture between the two would be utter perfection – and I guess I wasn’t the only one.

Gaga was announced as music director of the Versus / JW Anderson catwalk show last season which she also attended briefly during her non-promo period. Once the track Donatella was announced on the album it was pretty much guaranteed that the collaboration was in the making, officially. Earlier this month whilst she was in London doing ARTPOP promo she snuck into the studio to shoot the SS14 campaign with Mert & Marcus. I’m actually in awe, it’s a really perfect fit.

That Nicola reign just won’t let up. Diesel just unveiled a short fashion film by Inez & Vinoodh following the social media teasing of the stills from the new Brooke Candy for Diesel SS14 Accessories campaign.

Art directed by Nicola Formichetti of course, the black and white imagery features Brooke in her most demure and beautifully understated guise yet (even if a strip pole is included). The video also features Tessa Kuragi. The track showcased is Brooke’s Bollywood meets J-POP infused ‘Feel Yourself‘.

The film stars Karin Park and is directed by Thomas Knights – it was created as a result of the crowd-funded initiative in conjunction with Audacity of Fashion and also features Ada’s swimwear collaboration with Auria London.

The track featured is Opium (by Karin Park of course). Hair and makeup by Oscar Alexander Lundberg and Ann-Marie Lawson.

Travel has always played a huge part in the brand’s heritage and this collection felt like a logical and natural progression. Length and silhouettes appeared daring for the brand, short shorts, cropped formalwear and oversized jackets.

From a detail perspective, the rich, darker tie-dye had a delicious edge that took it far beyond the norm and expected as a concept for luxury (something I’ve never seen before) and the use of kimono and jacquard silk for the formalwear felt natural and not brash in any way. Today in Paris saw the launch of Spring Summer ’14 via a presentation showcasing “Transit Zone” – dubbed to be “an unusual encounter between business man’s wardrobe and the tourists”. This translates as a play on the iconic pieces of a man’s wardrobe – the pin stripe turned into pyjamas, the suite with sandles or a low cut tank top – essentially a vision that the modern man has crafted naturally in today’s society but that Gaultier is giving authenticity and purpose.

The rebellious collection includes floral and tile print and fishnet over the basic blazer keeping in line the Breton stripe and darker heritage of the brand. Some personal highlights below shot by Gregoire Alexandre.

The show also featured a unique film shot by Jessica Yatrofsky – set to follow.

Walking to an original soundtrack of Ennio Morricone from “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” by Giuseppe Tornatore, the collection drew inspiration from Sicilian mythology which led the collection to be highly focussed on tailoring – which you can see from the suits during the finale, is breathtaking.
