We recently featured Sky Canyon‘s intricate and immersive, Wijic and his vibrant and transcendental song, Bluesalicious, so we were thrilled to have the chance to review his composition, You Know That I’ve Loved You (For a Long, Long Time).

Immediately immersing us with rippling drums, Sky Canyon opens You Know That I’ve Loved You (For a Long, Long Time) with dimensional keys, Sky’s iconic vibraphone and saxophone that take on the roles of the main protagonists in the evocative composition.

Described by Sky as “mellow, even sultry” and conveying “intimacy and warmth with a Latin spice”, it is no wonder that we are completely mesmerized by his artistry.

The soulfulness of the saxophone played by Bob Rebholz feels nostalgic and refined, cohesively fused with ongoing percussion and luxurious vibraphone where Sky demonstrates his mastery of the instrument.

What is great about Sky, is that we can always expect the best quality jazz, from instrumentation, uniqueness, charisma and out-of-this world levels of talent.

Sky Canyon cites Lionel Hampton, Terry Gibbs, Bill Evans, Monty Alexander, Carlos Santana, John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis and Buddy Rich as sources of inspiration, but it is clear that he is creating universe of his own.

Regarding his musical tastes and expression, Sky comments “I’m motivated by how music can take me so many places, especially as I am an avid fan of jazz, rock, pop, classical, Latin, hip-hop and so much more. I wrote this piece originally as a classic swing tune, then felt inspired to shift it to a more Latin Jazz feel and love how it turned out. Musicians – and music aficionados alike – know that great music, and all great art in any form, inspires and lifts us up.”

Setting the vibe with enigmatic and charming vibraphone melody before the song expands with bass and keys, we are already mesmerized by Sky Canyon‘s latest release, Bluesalicious. Percussion and drums explode to invigorate us further as we are taken on a joyous and transcendental journey through Sky’s sonic landscape.

Sky Canyon has been a professional musician for over forty years, a composer, producer and artist rooted in the world of jazz, rock, classical, Latin and new age, and this comes through in his latest work. It is clear that someone with well over one hundred thousand hours of music experience has created the dimensional soundscape for Bluesalicious.

With vibrant nuances, a nod to classic jazz, the uniqueness of the vibraphone which gives charisma to the established creator’s talent, and the power of the extended band, we are fully immersed in the composition.

The piano takes centre stage a third of the way through the piece, with intricate and hyperactive jazz key work, we are astounded! Sky learned to play jazz vibraphone with Terry Gibbs, but has since gone on to create his own energetic output with the instrument.

We adore the playful and exciting nature of the track and the bass solo is once again, exquisite and guided by a textured cymbal, although taking on a dimension of its own. The vibraphone re-emerges for the final act, where the drums become the main protagonist briefly before the song culminates taking us full circle to the opening melody.
