Opening with the situational lyrics, “I fell in love with the wrong guy, now I’m sleeping on my own…”, fused with an immersive synth and textured riser, Sharl opens I Fell in Love with intrigue and dimensionality.

I Fell in Love is also the first song and lead single from Sharl‘s album, City Lights, which is out now! We have been covering the lead up to this moment by featuring a slew of singles from the rising Asian-Australian pop artist based in Melbourne, and needless to say, we are obsessed.

The opus takes us on a journey though the human condition, love and loneliness and also comes with an epic visual filmed in Canberra, directed by George Tsotsos. The music video features a cinematic interpretation of the song, centered around a visual theme of reflection and light prevailing through darkness.

We are in awe of Sharl’s emotive performance and acting chops. The mirror scene, where there are two protagonists engaging with each other is simply incredible, and the finale with the piano in the water explains why the visual has already won so many awards!

Although this is Sharl‘s first music video to present her artistic vision to the world, the video had already gained several awards on the film festival circuit including: Best Music Video: Paris Film Awards, Best Music Video: International Sound Future Awards, Best Music Video: World Premiere Film Awards, Best Asia and Pacific Music Video: International Sound Future Awards , Best Pop Music Video: International Sound Future Awards, Best Sound Design: International Sound Future Awards.

I Fell in Love is a moving piece of artistry, and we are excited for what is to come from the rising star. Speaking on her artistry, Sharl comments, “The music video for I Fell in Love is a beautiful visual exploration of the song which truly reflects my core as an artist. With the introspective and reflective nature of this album it was fitting to use a visual theme of reflection for the film as well. Themes of turbulence, distress, a cycle of healing and ultimately the rise of inner peace and self-love are explored in the video.”

Immersing us with compressed vocals and crescendoing keys, which expand into clarity, Sharl opens Darker Than Midnight with the introspective lyrics, “I’ve been alone in my thoughts, turning them inside out, trying my best to find escape, I’ve been drowning fear, obsessions and tears, til it hit me when you said….”

We then experience the vocals of Daniel Bohen who sings, “We’ll find another way, better to wake up much too late, oooh, we’ll live another day to see the moonlight fade away…”

Darker Than Midnight has been released by Sharl and Daniel as an opus to help provide meaning and optimism to the listener through difficult times. The track is written by both artists and produced by Daniel, who has produced Sharl’s previous releases.

We learn that Darker Than Midnight is “a representation of a state of mind. A situation in which it becomes harder to see what may lie ahead, but the vital thing is continuing to try.”

The pair tell us, “This song strives to showcase the feelings, the thoughts and the possibilities in a dialogue form, and from that, tries to find hope of a light among all the darkness.”

We are always in awe of the depth of Sharl‘s lyricism, and really appreciate the vocal presence of Daniel Bohen, which really dimensionalizes the track. The pulsating beat flows cohesively with the chorus and we love how Darker Than Midnight expands emotively, taking us in deeper as the song evolves.

A lyrical highlight is, “If our places were reversed, ways of the multiverse, you’d see the sight, and say: When will you realise?“, which really gives an added resonance and poetic nuance to the piece.

The story of the track documents a “wild night on the town”, and we appreciate the adventure that Sharl takes us on with her poetic lyricism, sensual vibes and melodically enchanting storytelling skills.

Setting the frequency with atmospheric keys, Sharl opens her latest single, That Girl with the introspective lyrics, “Those midnight drives to your place, there, they’re some kinda habit, irresponsible routine, no lights when you let me in, and I leave in darkness, no traces at the scene…”

The song starts to expands as Sharl sings, “I don’t wanna be that girl” with reference to unrequited feelings. Sharl’s vocals are flawless and immersive, we love her tone and delivery. The production of the track is quintessential pop with warm fuzzy moments and a sense of familiarity and futurism.

Speaking on the meaning of the song, Sharl says, “There are actually two layers to the meaning of the song. The more obvious top layer is the story told throughout the whole song of unrequited feelings, and the time spent with someone being bittersweet and painful because it’s one sided.”

Sharl continued to explain the other layer of the song relating to the “That Girl” trend (a catchphrase popularised on social media in a show of the quest for lifestyle perfection), stating that “When I saw it, at first, I thought that’s great! I definitely want to be ‘That Girl’! The activities are mostly positive, healthy things to do.”

“However, on closer inspection, it’s a movement that promotes an unrealistic level of perfection, and no one can be perfect all the time. So then I thought: whatever, I’m kinda close enough! But later, I actually decided that I didn’t want to engage with that social pressure at all, hence the line ‘I don’t wanna be that girl’ was born.”

We love the whirring bass and the way that Sharl whispers, “That Girl, That Girl, That Girl” is super catchy! Sharl is a pop singer/songwriter who is also a doctor (iconic!) based in Melbourne, Australia. Fans of Banks, Rina Sawayama and Kelela will be able to connect with That Girl.
