Drawing us in with an intricate, celestial synthscape and ethereal piano, The Kirk opens The Magician (originally by Secession / Peter Thomson) with a meditative allure, astral detailing, cymbal textures, and dimensionality. We are immediately enthralled by the energy of the composition and emotional depth that the opening lyrics convey.

The Kirk shares the prose, “If the chance were mine, you know I’d go, but all along you made that easy for me… If I had the chance to gaze again upon the ocean tell me what would I see… an empty sky, an empty sea, a violent place for us to be”

The opus expands with anthemic drums and a vibe that fans of David Bowie, Placebo, MGMT, and Kate Bush would be able to connect with. The build of the song is sublime, and we appreciate the metaphorical and philosophical depth of the message.

Whilst Scottish band Secession‘s original had a more vintage and muddy production, The Kirk‘s re-imagining is clean and clear, perfectly produced with a progressive mix. This helps to bring to life the emotional quotient of the song.

In essence, The Magician is about breaking free from a toxic, emotionally damaging relationship and essentially reclaiming personal strength. The lyrics reflect on being manipulated and made to feel small, but eventually reach a turning point where one can regain control of their life. It’s quite a poignant journey from vulnerability and emotional abuse to independence, resilience and self-worth, and we really appreciate The Kirk infusing this song with a new energy for 2026, at a time when many people need this message.

We learn that The Kirk is a dynamic music duo from the North-East of England. Their creative intention is to explore genres across the past, present, and future, with work reflecting versatile and adventurous sound.

In 2025, they released their debut single Unsaid, highlighting the consequences of leaving things unsaid, followed by Different (Not Less), celebrating neurodiversity. Other releases include the indie-pop track Out of Touch, the nostalgic 45, the summer-ready Only Yesterday and its unique dance remix Only Yesterday (We Were Dancing). Passionate about the holiday season, they released three festive tracks – 80s Christmas Day, December Girl, and a remix Unwrapped version of 80s CD and closed the year with their rendition of U2’s New Year’s Day.

We have added The Magician to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of The Kirk, and anticipate future releases from the talented duo.
