Last year, we featured Gianfranco Malorgio for his cinematic opus, Black Coffee, so when we heard that the visionary composer was back with Scattered Clouds, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves and explore his universe once again.

The composition opens with cerebral and industrial percussion textures, expanding with dramatic bass notes and astral detailing. The dimensionality is sublime, cinematic as always, and aligned with Gianfranco Malorgio‘s wider discography.

There are definitely more subversive elements at play here. The syncopated percussion nuances keep us enthralled throughout, whilst the juxtaposition between psychedelic 80s synths and loaded electronica details creates a trippy tapestry of sound.

There is no doubt that Scattered Clouds would be perfect for the score of a Gaspard Noé film or perhaps a movie like Limitless or Lucy, directed by Luc Besson. There are visionary, progressive and nostalgic elements at play here, almost like a video game come to life.

Speaking on the release, Gianfranco Malorgio confesses, “Scattered Clouds was composed with a possible film adaptation in mind and is part of a compositional concept inspired by 1980s science fiction films.”

Gianfranco Malorgio is an Italian musician and composer who began studying classical guitar at a young age under Maestro Giovanni Viola at the Morlacchi Conservatory in Perugia. In 2005, he founded the gypsy jazz group Hot Club Roma, inspired by Django Reinhardt, performing at major Italian venues and releasing their debut album Swing From Rome.

Over the years, he collaborated with notable artists such as Dario Pinelli, Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, and Tim Kliphuis, contributing to concerts, recordings, and award-winning film soundtracks including The House in the Clouds.

His career includes performances at prominent festivals and international venues like Le Quecumbar in London, as well as ongoing projects with actor Giorgio Tirabassi. He has also participated in various film scores, including Buoni a Nulla, and recorded albums such as Django Mon Amour and Paris Gipsy Guitars.
