Drawing us in with strummed acoustic guitar melody, Exzenya opens Scansion with a timeless mood before evolving with atmospheric vocals and cerebral undertones, tapping into a Latin pop meets R&B grunge adjacency – a genre expansive experience to say the least.

We are enthralled with the passion that Exzenya performs with, and her unique sound, which manifests with grit and allure. There is authenticity laced throughout the piece and a theatrical drama as she sings, “He left me breathless…”

Her wailing add libs add dimensionality and feel transportive, wild and filled with raw sensibility. She actually reminds us of early Mónica Naranjo. Scansion walks a line between control and instinct, about someone who knows exactly what they’re doing but still lets themselves get lost in the moment.

It is exotic and seductive at the same time and the vintage vocal effects are this trippy vibe to the piece. As for the title, it refers to a poetry technique “scansion”, which is how you break down a verse to find its rhythm.

“Scansion is about scanning someone’s patterns with such raw intimacy you can almost predict their next move,” Exzenya confesses. We also learn that Exzenya isn’t your typical new artist. She’s 55, a grandmother, and fully independent – writing, funding, and releasing everything herself. She holds degrees in psychology and communication, which certainly explains how sharp and intuitive writing, layered with intention.

“I write from everyone’s story, not just mine,” Exzenya adds. The emotion in Scansion feels both personal and universal, like something you’ve felt before but didn’t have the words for.
