The upcoming Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Indian films ever made. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, best known for the blockbuster Dangal, the two-part cinematic epic aims to bring one of the world’s most influential stories to the big screen with groundbreaking visual effects, a star-studded cast and an internationally renowned musical team. Combining Indian mythology with the scale of a Hollywood blockbuster, the film hopes to introduce this legendary tale to a new generation of audiences worldwide.

The History Behind the Legend

The original Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki. Composed more than 2,000 years ago, the story has influenced Indian culture, religion, literature and art for centuries. Its popularity has also spread throughout Southeast Asia, inspiring countless adaptations in theatre, dance, television and cinema.

The epic is iconic because it explores timeless themes of love, loyalty, sacrifice, courage and the battle between good and evil. For millions of Hindus, it is also a sacred story centred on Lord Rama, widely worshipped as an incarnation of Vishnu. At its heart lies the concept of dharma, or righteous duty, which shapes the characters’ decisions and struggles.

The Plot

The film follows Rama, a prince of Ayodhya who accepts fourteen years of exile to honour his father’s promise. His wife, Sita, and brother, Lakshmana, accompany him into the wilderness. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka, abducts Sita.

Determined to rescue her, Rama embarks on a dangerous journey with the help of Lakshmana, Hanuman and an army of allies. The story builds towards an epic confrontation between Rama and Ravana, exploring the motivations, loyalties and moral complexities of its central characters.

The decision to tell the story across two films gives the filmmakers more room to explore its enormous world, emotional depth and legendary battles.

The Star-Studded Cast

Ranbir Kapoor leads the film as Rama, while Sai Pallavi portrays Sita. Yash takes on the role of Ravana, bringing considerable star power to the central antagonist. Sunny Deol plays Hanuman, the devoted warrior who becomes one of Rama’s most important allies, while Ravie Dubey portrays Lakshmana.

The production is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and features an international creative team, including Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman, who are collaborating on the film’s score.

CGI and Hollywood-Level Visual Effects

One of the biggest talking points is the film’s visual ambition. DNEG, the Oscar-winning visual-effects company behind films such as Dune and Interstellar, is involved in bringing its mythical world to life. Audiences can expect elaborate palaces, fantastical creatures, supernatural powers and enormous battlefield sequences.

The production is also designed for IMAX, highlighting its ambition to deliver a truly cinematic experience. However, the finished film’s CGI quality will ultimately depend on the final execution rather than its budget or technical team alone.

Release Date and Expectations

The first instalment is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 5 November 2026, with the second part planned for Diwali 2027.

Ultimately, Ramayana has the potential to become a landmark in Indian cinema. Its success will depend on more than spectacular visuals and an impressive cast. The filmmakers must also honour the spiritual significance and cultural legacy of a story that has endured for thousands of years. If they achieve that balance, Ramayana could become one of the defining cinematic events of 2026.
