Drawing us in with intricacy and atmosphere, Matt Johnson opens his piano cover of For Good with a high emotional quotient, aligned with the original version from the musical, Wicked, composed by Stephen Schwartz. We appreciate the instrumental mastery and the passion that the cover is performed with.

Needless to say, due to the release of the films Wicked and the sequel Wicked: For Good, the story of Glinda and Elphaba has been dominating pop culture for the last two years, so we appreciate the timely nature of this release. Matt Johnson showcases his passion for the sentiment of the track, and his skillful connection with the architecture of the composition.

For Good is such a culturally important song because it captures the idea that meaningful relationships change people permanently, making it one of the most widely recognized musical theatre songs about friendship, growth, and lasting impact.

Matt Johnson‘s interpretation brings this to life perfectly. He acknowledges the drama along with the emotion and truly delivers the track in a way that would make fans so happy. Most compelling is Matt’s control of rhythm as he confidently adjusts the tempo to make the performance feel unmistakably human.

Nothing sounds mechanical or overly rehearsed, and the music instead feels natural, organic and emotive. Even without lyrics or orchestration, he preserves the core sentiment of the piece, honouring Schwartz whilst presenting it in a more intimate and reflective way. It truly could fit perfectly in the film.

We are in awe, and truly have been changed. We have added For Good to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Matt Johnson, including It’s Finally Out, and Dance of Joy.

John C. Buttigieg’s Perspectives – Solo Piano is an evocative journey through sound, where each track encapsulates a unique emotional and cinematic experience. Recorded at his home studio in Shepperton, UK, the collection of solo piano compositions offers a deeply introspective and immersive listening experience. With a neoclassical foundation and a minimalist touch, Buttigieg crafts a world of sonic poetry, where each note is imbued with purpose and emotion.

Misty Moorland opens the album with astral keys and a cinematic essence, evoking a celestial entrance into space or the dawn of time. The composition is delicate, elegant, and refined, striking a balance between poetic beauty and cathartic serenity. With a meditative edge, it sets the tone for the profound journey ahead. Voyage follows with serene, repetitive riffs reminiscent of nature’s rhythm, akin to a peaceful traveling experience, whether on Earth or beyond. The high keys guide the listener forward, exuding tranquility and exploration.

Glacial introduces an icy yet radiant soundscape, with high keys shimmering like an iceberg under the sun. The intricate performance exudes poetic grace, capturing the interplay of coldness and warmth. The elegance of Buttigieg’s playing brings the composition to life, allowing each note to breathe. Sunken takes a more dramatic turn, with a melancholic depth that adds dynamism to the album. It invites introspection, embodying the contrast of light and shadow within the musical narrative.

Elude, the album’s longest track, exudes a serene and transcendental energy. The high keys return, while rippling lower notes provide grounding. As the piece progresses, it grows in complexity, with layered chords and dramatic inflections that leave us in a state of curiosity and contemplation. Droplets mirrors its namesake, with high notes trickling from above and a magnetic lower register grounding the composition. There is a cinematic yet calming quality, capturing the power and fluidity of water in an almost hypnotic manner.

Caverns takes us into crystal caves, where amethysts and rubies shimmer in reflected water. The performance is intricate and poetic, balancing curiosity with tranquility. There is a high emotional quotient to this piece, adding a layer of intrigue while maintaining the album’s overarching sense of calm. Jeopardy, the finale, opens with a dramatic depth not previously encountered on the album. A lower timbre introduces a weightier atmosphere, yet the composition gradually evolves into a state of peace, leaving the listener with a profound sense of gratitude for both the instrument and the composer.

John C. Buttigieg, a British-Maltese neoclassical artist, brings a cinematic and meditative approach to his music, transcending traditional genre boundaries. His contemporary solo piano works have been featured on national television and radio, including the BBC and ITV. Known for his experimental and minimalist aesthetic, Buttigieg’s compositions explore themes of freedom, harmony, and romance, delving into the emotional intricacies of human experience. As a composer for MPH Music (Monkey Puzzle House Production Music), his work continues to shape the landscape of contemporary neoclassical music. Perspectives – Solo Piano is a testament to his ability to craft evocative, immersive soundscapes, offering a captivating blend of melancholy, thoughtfulness, and quiet optimism.
