We last featured Peningo Riders for crafting a gritty Americana story of loss, redemption, and resilience through Southern Rock storytelling on their single, Pawn Shop Guitar, so when we heard that the project was back with High Street Roadhouse, our curiosity was piqued, and we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

High Street Roadhouse opens with a fierce electric guitar soundscape with dimensional 8-bit style percussion and subtle sax, as Peningo Riders share ad-libs of the title of the track and the lyrics, “When you want to get away and not be found, yeah, there’s a crazy little place just across the tracks where you can turn your luck around, they’re gonna know your name, but it won’t be told…”

In essence, the song is a vivid and detailed expression about a hidden, lively roadhouse on High Street. It’s a place where people can escape, let loose, and perhaps turn their luck around. It feels like a movie in itself, and presents the venue as a gritty but welcoming honky-tonk with a rich, little-known history, cold beer, whiskey, gumbo, and music that brings people together.

This notion of community feels zeitgeist and is delivered at a time when we need it the most. Charming references to Bourbon Street, Baton Rouge, New York City, and Alligator Alley all give it a distinctly Southern, cross-country feel, whilst the repeated invitation to “come back” makes the Roadhouse seem almost legendary.

Naturally, the baritone saxophone gives the track a smoky, late-night energy that reminds us of The Blues Brothers crashing into a Southern rock bar, whilst the guitar swagger feels somewhere between The Allman Brothers, The Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd. We could easily imagine this soundtracking a modern-day Easy Rider, only with more gumbo and considerably better bar tabs.

We learn that the real-life Rye Roadhouse sits at the centre of the story, and the mythology surrounding the venue only makes the track more compelling. With appearances from rock royalty and generations of local musicians, it feels like exactly the kind of place that should have its own song.

For context, Peningo Riders is the independent rock duo of Eddie Pellon and Russ Davis, blending classic rock, blues, funk and Southern rock with a distinctly modern energy. Their musical DNA runs through Marley, Skynyrd, Zeppelin and The Allmans, but High Street Roadhouse feels firmly like their own invitation into the story.

Needless to say, we’re ready to grab a seat at the bar. High Street Roadhouse is gritty, soulful and full of character, and we have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the band!

Our obsession with Peningo Riders seems to grow with every listen. We featured their feel-good Americana debut, Duck That Jeep, and the wisdom-imbued sophomore single, Love Ain’t Everything, so naturally, we wanted to shine a light on their latest release, Pawn Shop Guitar.

Pawn Shop Guitar opens with an intricate and layered guitar soundscape with that classic Americana twang, staying true to the band’s identity. The opus expands with situational prose, brimful of poetic depth, as we are taken on a moving journey of human connection and the power of music.

The narrative of the track is incredibly strong, and super cinematic in its execution – a movie in its own right. In essence, Pawn Shop Guitar is a gritty Southern rock story about loss, resilience and redemption through the fictional tale of BJ Hawkins and his father, who is forced to sell his beloved guitar.

The story explores how hardship can break our spirit, but also how family, faith and specifically music can help rebuild it. In the tale, BJ tracks down the Pawn Shop Guitar and it becomes a symbol of hope and healing.

This metaphorical song feels very apt today, in a world where many of us are seeking connection and are experiencing trauma (wars, famines, genocides, oppression, poverty), it is music that gives us solace and escapism – whether it is listening, playing or writing about it.

That said, the inception of Pawn Shop Guitar came from Eddie’s real-life experience after Hurricane Michael devastated his family’s farm on the Florida-Alabama line in 2018, wiping out their cotton harvest. Years later, while driving through storm-damaged Marianna, Florida, he stopped at a pawn shop on Highway 90 and bought an Epiphone Les Paul guitar that felt like it carried its own story and was the genesis for the song.

Eddie says, “That storm snapped pine trees like toothpicks and took an entire season of our family’s blood and sweat with it. When I found that Epiphone Les Paul in that Marianna Pawn Shop years later, it felt like it had a story that needed to be told. Seeing that same shop get knocked down by a tornado and build itself right back up… that is exactly what this song is about.” He adds, “Pawn Shop Guitar is for anyone who has ever been knocked down, lost everything, and had to find their way back to life one chord at a time.”

Needless to say, we are in awe of Pawn Shop Guitar, especially the delivery switch-ups and the rapped segments that remind us of early Buck 65. The guitar performances are transcendental, inviting notions of cathartic euphoria before the finale breakdown of the track.

Bandmates Eddie Pellon and Russ Davis cite a plethora of influences, including Bob Marley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner and Journey, which we can feel manifest, but there is no doubt that Peningo Riders are creating a sonic universe unto their own design.

We have added Pawn Shop Guitar to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Duck That Jeep and Love Ain’t Everything and anticipate future releases from Peningo Riders!

We previously featured Marianna, Florida-based Peningo Riders when they brought to life the wholesome notions of a viral phenomenon with their feel-good Americana track, Duck That Jeep, so when we heard that the creators were back with Love Ain’t Everything, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Drawing us in with a glistening guitar soundscape and instrumental mastery with a count-in, expanding into a classic rock energy, Peningo Riders open Love Ain’t Everything with the lyrics, “Love Ain’t Everything, but it’s a real good start, someone told me long ago, you just got to play your part…”

In essence, the song reflects on the idea that love alone isn’t enough to sustain a relationship, but it serves as an important foundation. The repeated hook resonates like a mantra, and although it has a personal feel, there is no doubt it can be interpreted on a more universal level, especially in the face of current global turmoil.

Love Ain’t Everything shows us that love can bring us together, but relationships also require responsibility, honesty and effort. The phrase “you just got to play your part” implies that both parties must actively contribute to making the relationship work rather than relying on feelings alone.

The song describes a relationship where both partners were supposedly heading toward the same future, but one person secretly chose a different path. The line about discovering that the other person “checked out long ago” points to emotional withdrawal.

Later, the song shifts toward a more hopeful perspective. It acknowledges that people are often afraid to be vulnerable, but when they face these fears and truly open up, love can indeed grow stronger.

We deeply connect with how Peningo Riders share their wisdom and the timeless nature of their intentional artistry. Although the main theme is different from Duck That Jeep, there is consistency in their positive output and how love can connect us all.

Speaking on the release, frontman Eddie Pellon confesses, “This track is the spark that actually started the band. It delivers the hard truth that love is an enticing starting line, but it’s not the finish line. It’s a classic rock vehicle for a modern story – reminding us that the real work happens after the honeymoon phase fades.”

We also learn that the song began spontaneously during a guitar lesson between Eddie and guitarist Russ Davis. Frustrated about a romantic situation, Eddie suddenly stopped playing and shouted the hook: “Love ain’t everything, but it’s a damn good way to start!”

Of course, we love what Peningo Riders are creating with their emotive storytelling, classic Americana and Southern Rock vibes with epic guitar solos and intentional depth. We have added Love Ain’t Everything to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Duck That Jeep, and anticipate future releases from Eddie and Russ!

Drawing us in with cerebral crowd noise and an acoustic guitar soundscape with vocalization ad-libs of the title of the track, Peningo Riders open Duck That Jeep with charisma and intrigue before sharing the lyrics, “Well, if you like that Jeep, give it a duck, it don’t matter if it’s Wrangler, Cherokee, or a truck…”

We immediately connect with the charm that manifests with the delivery and production. These playful notions are what we need now more than ever as a society. Philosophically, Duck That Jeep celebrates spontaneous appreciation and the joys of simple gestures.

For some context, “Ducking” means placing a rubber duck on someone else’s Jeep. Typically, the rubber duck is accompanied by a kind note written, such as “Love the Jeep!” or “You’ve been Ducked!”. This is meant as an act of kindness, to steal a smile from someone who shares your same passion for Jeep.

The concept symbolizes acknowledging beauty, effort and individuality. It doesn’t really overthink it, it nods to an act of participation in shared culture and mutual respect. The track highlights living in the moment and valuing small and playful rituals as expressions of human connection.

On a deeper level, the song frames the Jeep as a metaphor for freedom, resilience, and the American spirit. Again, this is something zeitgeist and culturally important. By honouring the Jeep we are reminded to celebrate diversity, persistence and pride, reinforcing the notion that everyday actions can indeed reflect wider ethical values.

Speaking on the track, Peningo Riders confess, “We saw this massive, positive movement happening across the country – strangers connecting by leaving rubber ducks on each other’s Jeeps – and realized it didn’t have a soundtrack. Musically, we wanted to ground that fun concept in a real, swampy SRV shuffle. It’s a rock and roll song first, capturing a viral piece of American culture.”

Needless to say, we are in awe, and deeply appreciate the wholesome energy that manifests with Duck That Jeep. The instrumentation is timeless and masterful, the spoken word moments are sublime and we love the overall vibrancy that the song exudes.

We have added Duck That Jeep to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Peningo Riders!
