Establishing the mood with an intricate Spanish guitar performance with organic percussive hits on the side of the guitar, the Knabokov Collective (led by Patrick Costello, who we have previously featured for his intentional music) open Borderline (also known as Borderline: Chaos at the Border) with the situational lyrics, “We’re running for the border now, we’re running for our lives…”

The opus expands with a conscious mindset, reminiscent of activism songs like Bob Dylan‘s Hurricane as Patrick shares an emotive and real tale of survival. The shimmering trumpet and expressive keyboards add further emotion to the politically charged track. The creative ebbs and flows and meditative moment allow for respite before a stunning and emotional reprise! The guitar finale evokes the sentiment of Carlos Santana, and needless to say we are in awe!

The jazz-Latin-rock fusion energy is perfectly cohesive and holds a timeless vibe as Patrick Costello’s passionate vocals echo notions of pain and resilience. Desiree Jolly shares backing vocals which add warmth, in turn creating a textured, emotional sonic landscape for the track.

In essence, the lyrics confront the dire realities of Central America, particularly the 2009 US-backed coup in Honduras. Lines like “Honduras is our home, but gangs control the streets. The coup overthrew Zelaya, left the people on their knees” shine a light on the suffering caused by authoritarian regimes and imperial interests.

The song also critiques the Trump administration’s aggressive ICE tactics and highlights systemic US complicity in immigration crises. The repeated refrain about walls – “Walls, they don’t solve anything, they just redirect the pain” – underscores the futility of militarized borders and exposes the human cost of political indifference.

The music video features world-renowned Flamenco dancer Yaelisa, which further elevates the grace and culture of the song’s message. Through her expressive movement, it visualizes the anguish, resilience, and courage of displaced families.

Naturally, we are in awe of the deeply emotional track and have added Borderline to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of both the Knabokov Collective and Patrick Costello!

We recently featured Patrick Costello when he shared his high emotional quotient with a heart-wrenching ode to his late wife, You Can’t Ask the Wind Not to Blow, so when we heard that the talented artist was back with Baltimore City/Let the Brothers Breathe, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Drawing us in with a dimensional guitar performance and astral frequency, tapping into Blues-Rock vibe, expanding into a bold and dynamic soundscape, Patrick Costello opens Baltimore City/Let the Brothers Breathe with syncopated moments for intrigue and prose that references victims Freddie Gray from Baltimore, Eric Garner from NYC and Michael Brown from Ferguson.

For reference, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, and Michael Brown were Black men whose deaths at the hands of police became pivotal moments in the U.S. movement against police brutality and systemic racism.

The lyrics of Baltimore City/Let the Brothers Breathe paint a vivid and somewhat alarming picture of what went down. Eric Garner died in Staten Island in July 2014 after an officer put him in a banned chokehold while arresting him, during which he repeated, “I can’t breathe.” Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old, was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in August 2014, sparking nationwide protests. Freddie Gray, 25, died in Baltimore in April 2015 from spinal injuries sustained while in police custody after being arrested. Their deaths fuelled widespread outrage, protests, and the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In essence, what Patrick Costello is sharing here is a very important reminder to never forget these victims. The artist is channelling his art as activism at a very important time when we need this reminder the most.

Speaking on the release, Patrick confesses, “The music itself was inspired by blues and R&B rock songs of the past, and included a chorus that was meant to be an anthem of sorts, demanding that Black men in particular be protected from the violence, discrimination and prejudice that has sadly been integral to US and particularly police culture since the nation’s founding.”

He adds with reference to his collaborators, “Much appreciation is due to the fabulous musicians who contributed to this music, Tommy Odetto on guitars, Tim Baker on bass, the lovely and talented Desiree Joly on incredible background vocals, and most of all Ari Rios, proprietor of Laughing Tiger studios, great engineer, arranger, mixer and awesome musician in his own right. It was such a thrill to play drums and sing this passionate song with my great bandmates and collaborators.”

We deeply connect with how the opus serves as a statement of conscience. Patrick Costello harnesses the raw power of Blues-Rock to remind us that music can be both healing and disruptive. Naturally, we have added Baltimore City/Let the Brothers Breathe to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream You Can’t Ask the Wind Not to Blow.

Establishing the mood with a cosmic mandolin performance, layered with guitar, bass guitar and a sublime fiddle frequency, Patrick Costello opens You Can’t Ask the Wind Not to Blow with an alternative country meets bluegrass hybrid energy, and moving prose as he reflects on the passing of his late wife of 20 years, Erica Ziegler.

The opus expands with layered vocals and a sentiment that fans of Bob Dylan would be able to connect with. The piece is laced with authenticity, as Patrick taps into a high emotional quotient and shares the words, “She’s my heart and in my soul, I’d never loved someone so much…”

The instrumental solos are transcendental, and we appreciate the cohesive tapestry of sound that comes to life as an ode to Patrick’s muse. As for his lyricism, there are stunning metaphors, poetic prowess with his narrative-driven, visual brand of storytelling, and a cinematic allure that would make the piece perfect of a range of synch deals with a similar theme of loss – perhaps a remake of the iconic film, Benjamin Button.

Speaking on the release and his late wife, Patrick confesses, “Erica was so in love with bluegrass music and truly had a beautiful harmony singing voice – we had a family singing celebration in 2024, just a few months before her terminal cancer diagnosis. The process of writing, recording and producing this precious song has been incredibly cathartic for me, and my heart goes out to anyone and anyone who has lost a loved one to the inexplicable cruelty of cancer.”

With reference to the collaborators involved, he continues, “Once this song sprang forth, it only made sense for me to reach out to her favourite bluegrass musician, dobro maestro Mike Witcher and invite him to bring his bandmates to the Laughing Tiger recording studio in San Rafael, CA.”

The track features Chad Manning on fiddle, Mark Schatz on acoustic bass, and Jesse Appleman on Mandolin. Patrick adds, “My great friend and musician Tom Finch added super-tasty 12 and 6 string guitar to round out the crew.” Elaborating on the production, the widower says, “The studio proprietor, Ari Rios, is my soul brother/musical collaborator/co-producer, and he contributed some fabulous ideas about the song structure, arrangement and harmony vocals.”

We deeply connect with what Patrick Costello has brought to life with this touching ode to Erica, and have added You Can’t Ask the Wind Not to Blow to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Patrick Costello, including Baltimore City, and Give The People What They Want.
