Drawing us in with astral vocal textures and subversive percussion elements with cosmic melodies intertwined, expanding with a brooding and dimensional bassline, The Ellipsist opens Only Son with dynamism and intricacy.

We appreciate the originality of the composition and the cerebral fusion of industrial energy and cosmic notions. The opus expands with a high emotional quotient, combined with a darker, experimental nature.

Only Son manifests with a cinematic allure, perfect for a scene in a TV show like Euphoria on HBO or Elite on Netflix. The emerging presence of the piano adds a human sentiment to the piece, and we connect with the creative ebbs and flows that keep us enthralled throughout.

We learn that Only Son is the debut single from The Ellipsist – a NYC-based artist and producer tapping into elements of modern R&B and a more abstract sonic universe. The piece is built from fragments of sound and distant noise, designed to move fluidly between harmony and cacophony, intimacy and solitude.

The Ellipsist confesses to making music for the spaces language leaves behind – which is a concept that is also reflected in the project’s name: a word that seems like it should exist, yet doesn’t. Behind the project is artist Stephen Krieger – a neurologist based in New York City. He is also one half of The Formalist, alongside Erik Laroi, a duo known for elegant, experimental electronic pop infused with shoegaze ambience, with releases on Mother West.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Only Son to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we anticipate future releases from The Ellipsist!
