Establishing the mood with an intricate piano soundscape, Don Grybb opens One Step, One Breath, One Day At A Time with a high emotional quotient and introspective depth featuring the prose, “Some mornings the road feels longer than the road I’ve walked before, I wake with a heart full of questions and don’t know what’s waiting at the door, but I’ve learned I don’t need the answers, to take the next step I can find, sometimes courage isn’t fearless, it’s just leaving yesterday behind…”

Immediately we connect with the philosophical message that manifests. The build of the track is sublime and cohesive, leading us through to the hook and idea of taking One Step, One Breath, One Day At A Time. This intention feels poignant and zeitgeist, delivered at a time when we, as a species, need to hear it the most.

There is something wonderfully Forrest Gump about the philosophy here. We could imagine the song landing a sync placement in a film just like that, which cements the idea of keeping walking, keeping moving, and not overthinking the destination. We are also reminded of The Shawshank Redemption, particularly its belief in hope as something worth holding onto even when the circumstances around us suggest otherwise.

The delicate piano and expressive vocals create an organic, timeless and cinematic energy. The track truly understands that sometimes the simplest idea can be the most powerful.

We could also imagine One Step, One Breath, One Day At A Time soundtracking the closing scene of a coming-of-age film, a long drive home after a difficult year, or one of those Ted Lasso moments where a seemingly simple piece of advice suddenly hits much harder than expected. There is also a little Good Will Hunting vibe here – basically the idea that we don’t necessarily need to have our entire lives figured out before we are allowed to move forwards. Tomorrow can wait, indeed. The idea of living and breathing in the present moment is rooted in ancient Vedic and Taoist philosophies too, which makes the message of the song all the more stronger.

For context, Don Grybb is an independent songwriter whose catalogue explores hope, love, resilience, gratitude, loss and the experiences that shape a human life. His intention is uncomplicated: to create music that connects, tells meaningful stories and perhaps reaches somebody at precisely the moment they need it. One Step, One Breath, One Day At A Time achieves that poetically.

Naturally, we have added One Step, One Breath, One Day At A Time to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to explore Don Grybb‘s wider discography on YouTube, including When Heroes Ran In, and More Than A Song.
