In a cinematic landscape filled with sprawling dystopias and high-concept action, few short films manage to pack as much intensity, heart, and visual storytelling into under ten minutes as KIN. Written and directed by James Waterhouse, KIN is a taut and visceral short action-thriller that’s now available to watch online courtesy of Omeleto, and it’s already making waves across the global festival circuit.

Set in a ravaged, post-apocalyptic world where lawlessness reigns and the land is overrun by violent gangs, KIN opens in a dilapidated trailer where a mother lives in isolation with her infant. Their fragile peace is shattered when their supplies run low. With no other option, the mother heads out to scavenge or steal from a nearby gang of survivors. What follows is a stripped-down survival story driven by primal instincts, maternal devotion, and raw physicality.

The film features a commanding performance from Lauren Okadigbo, who delivers an emotionally resonant portrayal with little dialogue. Her strength is both physical and emotional – every stride, every blow, every desperate breath carries the weight of a mother willing to do anything to protect her child. Okadigbo’s background in stunt work and screen combat is put to stunning use here, making each action beat feel authentic, urgent, and hard-hitting.

Visually, KIN is a masterclass in economy and atmosphere. Shot by Calum Yeats, the bleak countryside is rendered with gritty realism, while the sound design and score by JJ Mitchell enhance the tension with a sense of looming dread. The desolate production design by Iain De Souza Callaghan anchors the film in a world that feels fully lived-in, brutal, and unforgiving.

What makes KIN so compelling is its immediacy. There’s no exposition, no wasted motion, just a mother on a mission, framed through kinetic direction, brutal action, and the ever-present ticking clock of survival. Waterhouse distills the post-apocalyptic genre to its core elements: need, threat, escape. The result is a breathless, emotionally charged journey that leaves a lasting impact.

Produced by Oz Thakkar, KIN has garnered attention at an impressive slate of festivals, including the Vision Feast Festival, HB Film Festival, Waco Independent Film Festival, Beeston Film Festival, Forbidden Worlds Film Festival, Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, Universal Martial Arts Film Festival, Romford Horror Film Festival, Short. Sweet. Film Fest., Dam Short Film Festival, WRPN.TV Short, Tight and Loose Global Film Festival, Urban Action Showcase, and the Fighting Spirit Film Festival.
