Establishing the mood with a dimensional drums performance, with a funk-adjacent bassline and atmospheric vocals, My Satellite open Denial with intrigue and thought-provoking prose. The opus expands with ethereal nuance to take us on a dynamic trip with psychedelic elements, cerebral ebbs and flows, and instrumental mastery. Needless to say, we are completely in awe.

The vocal performances are out of this world, and we are captivated by the overarching sound design of the piece, which manifests a cohesive and hypnotic tapestry of sound. Speaking on the message of Denial, My Satellite confess, “This song is about that morning after a couple’s first big fight. The first time when hurtful things are said.”

They elaborate with drama, “There is yelling. There are tears. The song comes in after all that. It’s that awkward time when things are still raw, not fully resolved, but one partner presses the other to put it behind them and enjoy the day and the subsequent night happily together. It’s a song that doesn’t wish to deal with the reality that this row is the first big crack in the relationship. It’s the first sign of the eventual demise of the relationship, but, still blinded by infatuation, neither partner sees it for what it is.”

Denial is deeply relatable as it captures the raw emotions and awkwardness. It resonates with those of us who have experienced similar situations, highlighting themes of denial and hope as partners try to put the fight behind them. The track encourages personal reflection, emphasizing the importance of addressing conflicts openly. Overall, it offers comfort through shared understanding and serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of romantic relationships.

We learn that My Satellite is comprised of Bryan Stage on vocals, guitar, and keys, and Andy Marshall who plays bass, keys and guitar, whilst Dan Grimes is featured on drums. The creators cite Radiohead, Minus the Bear, Tame Impala, and Glass Animals as sonic influences, which we can absolutely feel come through with Denial, although there is no doubt that the band is forging a unique sound unto their own.

We love what My Satellite are creating, and have added Denial to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our new TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the band’s wider discography, and anticipate the release of their much-hyped, chemically-induced incoming album!
