Drawing us in with an immersive and reverberating frequency with rippling water nuances, Minus32Heartbeat opens Dreams, first made famous by The Cranberries, with dimensionality, and the iconic opening lyrics, “Oh, my life is changing everyday, in every possible way, and oh, my dreams, it’s never quite as it seems, never quite as it seems…”

The opus expands with intentional depth and an exquisite vocal timbre, as we revisit the original message of the song, which is hopeful. Dolores O’Riordan tells us how she wrote the song about meeting a special someone who makes her deliriously happy. She confesses, “I wrote that about my first love when I was living in Ireland. It’s about feeling really in love for the first time.” We learn that Minus32Heartbeat connected to the lyrics in a different way, and felt it was a fitting tribute to his feelings about parenthood and his child.

We appreciate how Minus32Heartbeat, also known as artist Matt Friedlander, re-imagines Dreams, with a more enigmatic and experimental approach to song creation, designed to also reflect the sound of his upcoming record. The compositional nature of his cover is immersive yet minimalist, with a psychedelic edge and tangible atmosphere. Needless to say, we are mesmerized.

Speaking on his return to music and the record, the star says, “After taking fifteen years away from music, I have now completed recording my debut album, DHRICMV. It will be released later this year on my own label, Big Leather Jacket Music.”

With reference to his cover of Dreams, Minus32Heartbeat adds, “I feel this song is a cover that is fairly out of the ordinary. I recorded it as a capsule for my son, who will be born in January 2024.” This certainly explains the cover art for the release, which features Minus32Heartbeat‘s son as an ultrasound scan.

Matt cites The Velvet Underground, Oasis, Hans Zimmer, and M83 as sonic influences, which we can feel come to life with his cover of Dreams, although it is also clear that Minus32Heartbeat is manifesting a sound of his own.

We love the intention that Minus32Heartbeat is releasing with, and have added his cover of Dreams to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our brand new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we anticipate future original releases from the talented creator.
