Setting the tone with a luscious synth and alluring vocal textures with percussion detail, May Roze opens her debut EP, Heal with the possessing and enchanting track, A Few Months.

Fans of Banks and FKA Twigs will be obsessed with May Roze’s polished and emotive dark-pop sound. A Few Months features moody tones, celestial bells, waving deep industrial synths fused with Roze’s emotive vocal as she sings, “the time I spent craving for us, the time I spent craving for you”. We are hypnotized.

The second track on the EP is called Why and opens with the introspective spoken word introduction, “Let me tell you something, I’m not really sure what you’re expecting from me, if you expect me to wait for you for months and months, if you’re not ready, I can’t waste my time, you know, I’m ready…”

The sonically bright, but emotionally dark production is a perfectly cohesive fit for May Roze‘s tone as she questions with layered vocals, “tell me why, oh why?” The song has a dark R&B feel with introspective lyricism and synth riser that play with our emotions. We love the spoken word elements and the sensual harmonies.

When I See Your Face is the third track from Heal, and opens with panning synths and the breathy and seductive vocal, “see, I know I can stay…” The song features sickening percussion and glitches, which take us to the mid-point of the EP, Mad.

Mad opens with the poignant lyrics , “I feel. like a little child feels, lost within my mind, like I’ve gone mad…” The journey of the song touches upon mental health and is relatable content for many of us when we don’t understand life, reality or a situation. We are moved by May’s soaring vocal performance, and the production value is consistently flawless throughout the entire EP. Mad features the reassuring hook, “cos I know I’m on my way to better days…” as the artist comes into her power and heals.

The fifth song from Heal is called Everything Changes and takes on a more positive sonic dimension giving us hope as we self-realize in alignment with the artist’s journey on the record. May’s vocal is intimate and the harmonies are delectable, we are so moved by this composition and the emotive energy the song cements on the record.

Finally, we are introduced to the title track of the EP, Heal. “They say time will heal ya, they say that time will heal your pain…”, the song culminated in a series of realisations from the rising artist who is tired of crying and ready to move on.

We are grateful for the sonic journey that May, who is also an Aquarius, has taken us on with the record. The rising artist wrote this EP during an important but emotionally difficult chapter in her life, and this experience and darkness has been channeled in a sonically optimistic, and emotionally evocative journey of the EP.

Speaking on the record, May, who is based in London but born and raised in Switzerland, says, “It contains lessons, love and heartbreaks. The feeling of needing something that can’t be met, incomprehension, anger, grief to finally letting go.”

Heal contains “lessons, love and heartbreaks”, and we are forever enamoured by the journey that the rising star has taken us on and have been immersing ourselves in May’s wider discography. We have also added A Few Months and Everything Changes to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
