Last year, we previewed some of Marc Soucy‘s archive ANTARTICA tracks, namely, Mayhem In Antartica, and The Out Cats, so when we heard that Marc had released the entirety of the record, Antartica Live, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his universe once more.

Antartica Live opens with Mayhem In Antartica, which sounds like a cinematic progressive-rock epic that begins with regal, synth melodies and textured percussion before evolving into a high-octane fusion of Spaghetti Western atmosphere, cyberpunk energy, and vintage analog synth virtuosity. It feels like the soundtrack to a frantic 1980s car chase, driven by live bass, fierce syncopated drums, and psychedelic, mind-bending synthesizers that make the whole piece feel both timeless and intensely futuristic.

Next up is Charlie Backwards, which opens with an 8-bit cerebral energy with whirring synths, expanding into a playful and divergent almost 1960s vibe which sounds like something one might experience in a video game. We appreciate the trippy and psychedelic notions and the fast-paced energy that manifests. It builds with drama, and the tempo shifts keep us enthralled throughout.

This leads us to When I Take The Five, which fits the same cinematic universe, but this time with rolling keys and more jazz inflections. The piano performances are out of this world and what strikes us the most is the ability to perform at such a high velocity.

No This Isn’t Jazz Either further cements this psychedelic and high tempo energy that really demonstrates the skillset that ANTARTICA has to offer. For some background, ANTARTICA is a progressive fusion trio from Boston that emerged in the early 1980s, built around the instrumental compositions of keyboardist Marc Soucy, alongside bassist Jeff Carano and drummer Ray Lavigne.

We appreciate the highly cerebral, almost haunting twist that No This Isn’t Jazz Either has to offer. It’s rather meditative and certainly trippy, the astral synths are built on with a subversive bass and eventually transmute into a more whimsical hysteria that once again cements the masterful ideologies that come with this resurgence.

The Out Cats, which we previously featured sounds like a surreal progressive jazz-fusion adventure, blending cinematic storytelling, virtuosic instrumentation, and playful video game-like synth textures into a mysterious, psychedelic journey. It moves between dramatic crescendos, intricate breakdowns, and colourful 8-bit inspired passages, creating the feeling of an avant-garde sci-fi soundtrack where prog, humour, and conspiracy-fuelled imagination collide.

Next is Accelerator, which opens with rolling drums and cosmic detailing. The track is dynamic and captivating, especially with the vocals and shooting laser textures, tapping into further sci-fi motifs. Turn For The Worst opens with a more dramatic energy, like a scene from a Superman movie. We appreciate the melodic depth of the piece, and the rhythmic build, again tapping into that video game sentiment, like a Sonic The Hedgehog score. There is a euphoric energy that transmutes here that feels like a spiritual ascension.

The City serves as a more nocturnal synthwave piece with astral arpeggios and a brooding melodic performance. The detail is intricate and again the crescendos and sonic switch-ups are totally hypnotic. We appreciate the dimensionality of the track and the subversive undertones. The trio’s influence from progressive giants like Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant, Return to Forever, and Emerson, and Lake & Palmer really comes to life here. The psychedelic synth that emerges is out of this world and almost feels like the climax of a movie scene, and a highly pivotal moment for the album as a whole.

Then Clem’s Cakewalk opens with a rhythmic respite, giving us some space to breathe with repeated motifs that feel calming and grounding. Broken Latin opens with drama and intrigue and builds with passion and sonic excellence. Again the track allows the trio to truly show off that they work together so cohesively, resulting in a track that feels like a moment from a detective film. The piano riffs are excellent.

Finally, we experience Actual Snow which is a fierce and futuristic bass-driven moment, infused with the signature jazz inflections that have made up the whole album thus far. The lyrics are a nice touch, and add narrative to the piece. The emotive midpoint of the song allows a more introspective journey before the trio once again showcases their visionary instrumental skillset by building into a bold and pulsating futurist jazz expression, leaving us yearning for more.

Drawing us in with a rising meditative frequency, evolving with static and atmospheric, siren vocal harmonies, Marc Soucy opens The Descendants Of Eliza Delaney with intrigue and dimensionality. The opus expands with an astral folk riff, expanding with fiddle, flute, tin whistle, and uilleann pipes to tap into a traditional Irish energy.

The composition holds a cinematic allure with rolling drums that evolve with a more assertive presence as the flute and guitar take centre stage. The track is perfect for a future version of The Wind That Shakes the Barley, or The Secret of Kells.

We enjoy the high octane journey of the piece and learn that The Descendants Of Eliza Delaney and its accompanying video are dedicated to the people of the Irish diaspora and their contribution to the English and American industrial revolutions.

Marc confesses, “It simultaneously celebrates this through my wife’s heritage, and is dedicated to her. It takes place in three portions, each of a distinct Irish and Celtic influence.” We appreciate the segmentation of the track, the opening act feels more traditional, whilst the second act hones into a growing sense of urgency before the final portion which has a fully high octane mood.

The visual features stunning scenery, a mysterious female muse who we can assume represents Marc’s wife, as well as bustling streets, ships and other imagery that are quintessentially revolution based. The audio-visual journey feels both educational and entertaining at the same time.

Marc Soucy is a Boston-based composer, producer and multi‐keyboardist known for his genre-blending, immersive instrumental music. We deeply connect with his hybrid works that draw on influences from classical, jazz fusion, progressive rock, world and ambient music, and have previously featured The Out Cats, Through The Quadrangle, and American Velocity! We have added The Descendants Of Eliza Delaney to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Marc Soucy‘s exquisite growing discography, and anticipate future composition from the visionary artist.

Marc Soucy opens The Out Cats with a cerebral spoken word introduction “For centuries, secret societies are rumoured to have been manipulating world events, investigators have uncovered a connection between one of these societies and the events surrounding the progressive musical group, ANTARTICA…”

The genius conceptual and avant-garde intro invites us to select our preferred style of music, and of course, in the video, we see the word: PROG. The opus expands with sublime instrumentation into a jazz fusion with dramatic nuance.

Masterful performances guide us with the cinematic appeal that we have enjoyed thus far from the ANTARTICA project which has been unearth decades later to ensure that it sees the light of day. Marc tells us, “This is the fifth installment of the ANTARTICA: The Live Archives series, all music having been composed by me as a young man. It marks the culmination of the works of Antartica the band, and launches my direction as a composer, setting the early stages of where I am heading now.”

There is that playful dimensionality that we have come to adore from the project – akin to a video game, boundless in energy and colour. Again, reminding us of a SEGA game. The video has a super cerebral edge questioning reality as we know it with the subtitles that accompany the composition.

We appreciate the high octane nature and the trippy and psychedelic detailing that allow us to lose ourselves in this 8-bit universe. We learn that The Out Cats is the most ambitious and complex piece of music played by ANTARTICA. The creative ebbs and flows and soft breakdowns and rebuilds are enigmatic and magnetic. The piano outro and spoken word conclusion bring the story full circle. It’s insanely clever and we love the journey!

Marc Soucy tells us how he pushed his own limits and the music video had to do the same. Jeff, Ray, and Marc always took “a collective deep breath before starting any performance” of this work. The video presents a mysterious conspiracy theory wrapped in the “ANTARTICA mythology” that has been developing over the previous music videos. It is meant to be humorous, yet also a commentary on the prevalence and spread of conspiracy theories nowadays.

We have added The Out Cats to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Marc Soucy and ANTARTICA, and anticipate future releases.

Our obsession with the mighty Marc Soucy continues as he unveils his latest opus, Through The Quadrangle. By now, you will know that we have been covering the talented composer’s releases in detail, so naturally, we couldn’t wait to experience Through The Quadrangle, and share our experience.

Drawing us in with a meditative frequency with cerebral nuances akin to entering a psychedelic trip, the opus taps into a cinematic allure and a sense of mystery. A vocal synth emerges, bringing a human essence to the composition before bold orchestral strings are fused with an Indian female vocal sample. It is elegant, reminding us of a fusion with 60s Bollywood and futuristic, celestial elements.

A sitar performance guides us further, tapping into a serene and divine tone as the drama builds, like a scene in an Indian film. The vocals are transcendental, and the use of Indian string details with the sitar creates an authentic sound that could be perfect for a Hindi language blockbuster.

There is almost a Wild West energy that also transmutes with the piece as the drama ensues. During the third minute of the piece we experience a shifted sitar melody, rooted in Eastern chord progressions with an almost industrial, glitched guitar moment.

The ebbs and flows are serene with a meditative moment and luscious vocals having us feel like we are at a temple in Hyderabad for a moment before a stunning rebuild of the track ensues. The vocals become more astral whilst a high octane strings performance and modern drum work come into play, dimensionalising the track further and showing us that Marc’s composition genius is unrivalled.

He comments, “This 13th installment, and grand finale of my “STIR” series is meant to come full circle and summarize one of the central concepts of the music series. The interconnectedness of cultures and history – n this case via music and dance traditions – has been a guiding principle of STIR.”

He adds, “This is the longest piece, and truly needs to be to summarize the entire message. It connects the historical journey of musical ideas from India, Central Asia, The Balkans, The Middle East, across North Africa to Spain and Portugal, then across to Latin America, Mexico, and finally the American southwest. The various cultures range from conservative to very expressive, but there is a common thread there.”

We are in awe of Through The Quadrangle and how movement manifests within us through the piece as an embodiment of Shakti. The trip that we are being taken on is as divine as it is cinematic, and we are grateful to Marc Soucy for the boundless energy that he puts into his art and this almost ten minute long composition! We have added Through The Quadrangle to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists!

Marc Soucy requires no introduction on this site, as we have been featuring the star’s epic compositions consistently for the last few months. Naturally, when we heard he had just released American Velocity, we were curious and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience in detail!

The track opens with a bold soundscape akin to the National Anthem, but darker, more dramatic and almost set in a dystopian future reality. The rolling marching drums are intertwined with cymbal crashes and an eerie orchestral energy that feels celestial, spacey futuristic and almost a bit scary!

American Velocity could be the score of a Star Wars movie, the Handmaids Tale or an apocalypse film, or maybe just reality as we know it considering the dark state of times that seem apparent these days, no matter how much we try and escape them.

The opus expands with an almost Irish folk adjacent energy, tripping into a Hillbilly jig and keeping us astutely on our toes throughout. The energy lightens up and we are reminded of the charm of the Americana identity. Less menacing, and more playful. Like that scene from Thelma and Louise, before they shoot the guy!

As with all of Marc Soucy‘s compositions, we are never bored – the next switch up feels almost like an 8-bit video game, it is a subtle evolution but we are back in the realms of a Nintendo game from the 1990, maybe a Mario Kart track set on a farm.

The composition ends with an air of positivity and possibility, reminding us that the initial darkness can be overcome and that love will eventually prevail. This is the prophetic nature of Marc’s compositional mastery – always intentional!

Marc confesses, “As a concept within my STIR series, American Velocity sits somewhere in between Montana and The Paradigm’s Shift, celebrating the continued growth and contributions of an American spirit on the rise. The space program, modern medicine, and technology are emphasized. Musically, American Velocity tracks the music of European classical traditions, especially turn of the 20th century composers, through the Americanization of these music influences as folk and popular styles became more dominant.”

Marc Soucy composed, performed, produced, and mixed the piece entirely by himself, without using AI or music-generating tools. Inspired by composers like Debussy and Copland, the music honours the American spirit and creativity and was done in his home studio using keyboards, virtual instruments, and careful editing.

We have added American Velocity to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Marc Soucy‘s growing discography, and anticipate future releases from the visionary composer!

Drawing us in with a count in of four, Marc Soucy opens Charlie Backwards with a cerebral nature, expanding into a super dimensional jazz meets prog-rock hybrid energy with textured drums, cymbals and a galactic piano performance.

The opus feels like we are sat at a high octane futuristic version of Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in Soho, where the instrumentalists are on acid. The trip feels intricate and yet expansive. There are creative ebbs and flows, nuanced moments of silence before dynamic performances that showcase human musical excellence.

The tempo shifts are welcome and almost add a cosmic vibe for brief moments before we are enthralled in an almost car chase-esque universe. There is a super fast synth performance that emerges sending us astral and actually reminds us of a 1990s video game, akin to playing Sonic The Hedgehog on a SEGA Megadrive. The track would actually be perfect for one of the new Sonic movie sequels. Marc, we need to see that happen!

As if the pace couldn’t increase, synth arpeggios increase in tenacity, almost like we are reaching a climax – it feels almost otherworldly, laced with cinematic allure and as if we are about to explode before a momentary descent and a climactic and playful finale sending us beyond the cosmic into another dimension!

We learn that the track was recorded live in a stone cellar in Dracut, Massachusetts, and is designed to embody “raw creativity with no overdubs or edits”. This reflects Marc’s overarching innovative approach to composition. He cites Vince Guaraldi as an influence but there is no doubt that Marc Soucy is consistently manifesting a universe of his own.

With reference to the name of the track, Marc confesses, “The title Charlie Backwards refers to the fact that my main piano theme feels like the Charlie Brown theme, only played backwards. This is not literally true, but a fun way to look at it.”

Speaking on the pace and accompanying visual, “It’s perhaps the most high energy piece I composed in that era. The music video reflects that by featuring bobsled footage, representing fast forward motion.”

Naturally, we have added the masterpiece to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream Marc Soucy‘s ever growing discography, including his archive ANTARTICA tracks!

Naturally, when we heard that he had shared an eight minute opus titled Mayhem In Antartica, we were curious to say the least and had a feeling that we might be in for something special.

Opening with an organic oft fuzz and a melody almost akin to the announcement of a king’s arrival, intertwined with textured cymbal strikes, the melody evolves with a higher octave version and a more dramatic flair. This leads to a guitar-esque synth performance which invites us into an almost Spaghetti Western energy, something that Marc has experimented with before.

Dimensional percussion, a live bass and cerebral synths with muted bells create a crescendo before we are in for a high octane ride with an almost cyberpunk meets Night Rider vibe. Marc showcases his compositional mastery and ability to create a genre expansive experience that feels both cinematic and dimensional.

It is almost as if we are in a race against time, perfect for the score of a movie with a car chase. We learn that the composition serves as a tribute to Marc’s past endeavours and was actually recorded live in 1983 in the stone cellar of a farmhouse in Dracut, Massachusetts – captured using only three room microphones without any overdubs or mixing.

Marc tells us that through “meticulous audio restoration and mastering” in 2023 and 2025, the composer has preserved the essence of the music, with a timeless, yet contemporary flair. The synth performances are mind-bending and exquisite, high tempo with an edge of psychedelia! With an organic bass line and the fierce drum work, with syncopated moments, we feel like we are on an 8-bit DMT trip!

Marc cites Emerson, Lake & Palmer, other progressive artists as influences, and adds, “It is in fact a partial tribute to Keith Emerson.” Marc also confesses that this is the first of five tracks by Antartica – his progressive collaborative trio with drummer Ray Lavigne and bassist Jeff Carano. Marc seeks to pay homage to this period in his life, and preserve the work he and his bandmates worked hard at.

We love the intention and the dynamism that Mayhem In Antartica pertains to, and we have added the composition to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we watch the cinematic, accompanying visual, and await the remaining four releases from the Antartica project!

Marc Soucy‘s latest opus, Sympatico Now, opens with an immediate sense of intrigue. A cerebral and industrial texture takes shape, layered with metallic tones that are both dramatic and slightly unsettling. The introduction plays out like a warped fairground experience, evoking a sense of distorted reality with an underlying horror-coded ambiance. This gripping opening sets the stage for a complex and ever-evolving composition that refuses to adhere to conventional musical boundaries. Soucy, known for his ability to blend styles and create immersive sonic landscapes, once again proves his prowess in the realm of hybrid electronic music.

As the track progresses, a dimensional synth sweeps in, its cinematic quality lending itself seamlessly to the world of espionage thrillers. One could easily imagine this motif finding a home in a James Bond 007 film, adding to its mystique and grandeur. Padded drums provide a guiding force, grounding the ethereal elements while allowing them to soar. Then comes the arrival of luscious orchestral strings, a signature of Soucy’s intricate style, adding an extra layer of depth. This expansion into a fuller, symphonic sound creates a feeling of high-stakes adventure, a hallmark of masterfully composed film scores.

The intricacy of Sympatico Now is a testament to Marc Soucy’s experience and attention to detail. Every note feels deliberate, every texture meticulously crafted. As we approach the two-minute mark, a melodic protagonist emerges in the form of a soaring string arrangement, leading the listener further into the adventure. This moment of clarity and forward momentum solidifies the track’s storytelling nature, reinforcing Soucy’s commitment to composing music that not only sounds compelling but also evokes emotion and narrative imagery.

Dynamism remains at the core of Sympatico Now, as the high strings take centre stage in an ethereal yet dramatic fashion. The grandeur of the composition at this stage is reminiscent of the iconic collaboration between Janet Jackson and Vanessa-Mae on Velvet Rope. There is a sense of tension and release that drives the track forward, allowing it to breathe and evolve rather than settle into a predictable structure. The balance between electronic and orchestral elements remains impeccable, reinforcing Soucy’s ability to merge genres effortlessly.

Just when we believe we have grasped the essence of the track, Soucy delivers a sonic switch-up infused with Eastern nuances. Plucked strings, reminiscent of a harp or traditional Eastern instrumentation, introduce an entirely new layer to the composition. This shift propels Sympatico Now into a more cosmic and exploratory space, as if the track itself is expanding beyond its initial atmosphere into something far more otherworldly. The seamless transition into this new sonic territory is a mark of Soucy’s expertise in world music influences and genre-blurring composition.

Marc Soucy has described Sympatico Now as the 10th single in his “STIR” series, a body of work designed to push the boundaries of stylistic fusion. His goal, as he states, is to be a “unique voice in a sea of sameness,” and with this track, he undoubtedly succeeds. The ability to weave industrial textures, cinematic grandeur, orchestral mastery, and global influences into one cohesive piece is no small feat. Sympatico Now is a testament to the boldness of Soucy’s artistic vision and his dedication to delivering music that challenges expectations.

As a composer and producer, Marc Soucy has spent years refining his craft, navigating technological advancements while maintaining a deep-rooted connection to classical and world music traditions. Sympatico Now serves as yet another example of his ability to craft immersive, thought-provoking soundscapes that transcend conventional music genres. With each release, he invites listeners to embark on a journey – one where sound and imagination intertwine to create a singularly compelling experience. We have added Sympatico Now to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the composer’s exquisite body of work that we have been reporting on!

Marc Soucy’s Montana is a deeply evocative and masterfully composed piece that transcends mere musicality, embodying a philosophical and emotional journey through sound. Opening with a timeless and classic piano performance, the piece immediately sets a tone of elegance and introspection. The opening notes feel like a whisper from history, a beckoning to explore a rich and layered sonic landscape. As the composition unfolds, intriguing and cinematic chord changes take center stage, seamlessly shifting between moods and textures, creating an immersive experience that would be equally at home as the score to an epic film.

The orchestral soundscape of Montana is rich with emotional depth. Strings, introduced with a delicate yet commanding presence, amplify the sense of grandeur while lending a deeply emotive quality to the composition. These elements do not merely exist as sonic embellishments but as integral voices in the narrative Soucy crafts. The inclusion of Eastern percussion elements subtly shifts the piece’s trajectory, adding an element of intrigue and movement. These percussive textures, accompanied by soft, almost meditative chants, imbue the piece with a spiritual quality, transforming “Montana” from a mere composition into an auditory pilgrimage.

As the piece progresses, an astral flute emerges, elevating the music into an almost cosmic dimension. The flute’s presence suggests transcendence, as if gazing beyond the physical realm into something infinite and boundless. The dramatic build-up that follows intensifies the composition’s storytelling essence, drawing us deeper into its emotional core before returning to the original piano motif. This structural return is not a simple repetition but rather a culmination, imbued with the weight of the journey undertaken, a homecoming that feels both familiar and profoundly changed.

Beyond its sonic beauty, Montana carries a philosophical weight that resonates with us. As Soucy himself describes, the piece is inspired by the development of the United States between the 1840s and the 1940s, a period marked by rapid growth, industrial expansion, and profound social transformation. His composition captures the duality of this history: the optimism of a rising superpower and the sorrow of those who were left in its wake. The music, like history itself, is layered with triumph and tragedy, celebration and reflection.

The world music elements present in Montana are not mere additions but fundamental to its essence. They remind us that America is a melting pot of cultures and ideas, that its very identity is shaped by the fusion of countless voices and histories. Soucy’s mastery of compositional ebb and flow ensures that each element—whether classical, cinematic, or world-influenced – finds its place, contributing to an experience that feels both personal and universal.

In many ways, Montana is not just a composition but an experience, a meditation on history, identity, and the passage of time. It is a piece that lingers long after its final notes have faded, echoing in the mind as both a question and an answer. Elegant and refined, Soucy’s work is a testament to the power of music to evoke, to transport, and ultimately, to illuminate.

Naturally, we have added Montana to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the talented composer’s exquisite, growing discography, including the outstanding, Tashkent Fire Club.

Marc Soucy‘s Chill is a transcendent introduction to 2025, a year rife with possibilities, and what better way to greet the unknown than with a composition as multilayered and expansive as this? From its very first notes, Chill immerses us in a dimensional synthscape, where astral keys beckon us into a realm of serene exploration. The jazz-funk adjacent energy ignites a spark of motion, a gentle yet commanding force that pushes us to dream while grounding us in the beauty of sound. Soucy’s penchant for intricate arrangements shines here, creating a piece that feels like a cerebral journey – a sonic meditation that showcases the genius of his instrumentation.

The cinematic energy of Chill is undeniable. Its layers unfold with the elegance of a well-told story, making it not only a brilliant piece of music but also a natural fit for film soundtracks or visual montages. One can easily imagine it accompanying a pivotal moment in a movie – a scene of self-discovery or the quiet culmination of a long journey. Soucy masterfully uses the saxophone to add depth and warmth, its solo a sublime touch that evokes both nostalgia and futuristic ambition.

The emergence of the piano is equally charming, a gentle pivot that invites intimacy into the mix. And then comes the mid-piece switch-up: a drum riff that shifts the entire composition into a spacier, more futuristic vibe. It’s a bold move, the kind that keeps us on our toes, reminding us of Soucy’s ability to blend unpredictability with coherence. The gradual fade-out feels like a sigh of relief, a whispered invitation to embody the titular vibe – to simply “chill.”

Soucy himself has described Chill as a homage to the jazz-funk influences that shaped him, and this reverence is palpable in the track’s DNA. His ability to weave melodic and rhythmic complexity into something that feels organic rather than chaotic is nothing short of masterful. Each element – whether a soaring saxophone or a subtle drum groove – finds its place, contributing to the larger narrative.

As a part of his STIR series, Chill serves as a signpost for Soucy’s evolving direction. It embodies his desire to merge global music, sci-fi surrealism, and hybrid electronic sounds into a cohesive experience. The track is both a testament to his past and a bold statement about where his artistry is headed. As he continues to explore jazzy styles, Chill promises that his journey will remain as vibrant and boundary-pushing as ever.

Starting the new year with Chill feels symbolic: a moment of pause and reflection, but also an invitation to step forward into the unknown with a sense of wonder and calm. It is a track that doesn’t just invite us to listen – it compels us to feel, imagine, and dream. We have added Chill to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Marc Soucy, and anticipate future releases from the genius composer this year!
