Establishing the mood with an intimate piano performance with astral notes and a vinyl textures, Markoe opens Malta with introspective prose and the lyrics, “I’m the only one awake now, drowning in my own thoughts, I thought I was happy, but I cry alone on the balcony…”

The opus expands with a melancholic yet inspiring energy and luscious harmonies, as Markoe paints a picture of her reality and ambitions. Her authenticity is tangible as she shares a commentary on her present state as an artist. She sings, “Wishing for a life of fame I may never get, don’t let it fade away, I know I chose the right game…”

Markoe‘s poetic prowess is tangible, and we appreciate the orchestral evolution of the track – fans of Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish would absolutely be able to connect with Malta. The transportive nature of the song is also very real, as Markoe sings from her balcony in Malta.

We learn that Markoe used to be a full-time primary school teacher. She left teaching to pursue her dream of making emotional, vulnerable music. Malta is her debut single, written at 3am on a balcony while travelling with her family. She tells us how she was was pregnant, tired, and torn between a safe life and a creative one. That struggle inspired Malta, manifesting a quiet confession and assertive rebellion.

The Australian artist is sharing her soul’s purpose, following a dream while trying to meet everyday expectations. With her unique artistry and bold style – featuring long pigtails, dark feminine tones, and raw honesty – Markoe is already becoming relatable and iconic at the same time. “Malta is just the beginning,” says Markoe. “It’s the first time I stopped hiding and let my full story come through in the music.”

The story behind the installation: British designer Hasan Hejazi (Kylie, Marina and the Diamonds, Fergie, Sugababes and more) and KARLISMYUNKLE (Nik Thakkar) collaborated to create “Second Skin” – a work of pop-art inspired by Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In to celebrate the Circus: Masquerade Ball. Bringing Hasan’s archive collection back to life using a transparent second skin, the installation reflects the overarching narration of the acclaimed director’s latest dramatic release.
