Drawing us in with a minimalist electric guitar soundscape and a captivating vocal timbre, Luke Martin opens Superstar with situational prose as he shares the lyrics, “It was summer in December, she asked me what I mean but I don’t remember, you’re so crazy babe just wait for me, and she said baby, don’t be late, I wanna catch a lift but I know it’s not great, wait, just wait for me…”

The track unfolds with charm and textured drums as Luke Martin takes us on an existential and personal journey. In essence, Superstar is about dreaming of escaping the ordinary. It serves as a poetic ode to fame and admiration, whilst struggling with loneliness, self-doubt and emotional pain.

The message carries an all-or-nothing mentality, where success feels inseparable from self-worth for Luke. There is no doubt that the song holds a cinematic allure and would be perfect for a TV show like 13 Reasons Why, or Elite, but also films like Cruel Intentions and Marty Supreme. Although the lyrics mention luxury, the final lines reveal that these are just symbols of wanting to be seen. It’s rather wholesome in the end.

We appreciate the raw existentialism that manifests, which feels pretty relatable. The contrast between confident declarations of becoming a “superstar” whilst admitting to feeling “so lost” is super zeitgeist and suggests a very real conflict between ambition and insecurity.

Speaking on the inception of the track, Luke confesses, “Superstar came from my first year at university having made the decision to take music seriously. I know what success was supposed to look like, I just didn’t know how to get there. That feeling became the basis of the song.”

The rising artist adds, “When I sent the demo to my tutor, he loved it but challenged my perspective on what being successful actually means. That conversation changed my view of the song. Superstar became less about chasing fame and more about questioning whether that’s what I really wanted in the first place. By the end of the track, it’s less about becoming a superstar and more about the motivation behind it.”

Luke cites Sam Fender, Fontaines D.C. and Coldplay as sonic peers, and we also believe that fans of Arctic Monkeys would be able to connect with what Luke Martin is creating. Following the success of his previous band, The Repertoire, who earned support from BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio whilst selling out the Camden Assembly and Bush Hall, Luke is now launching his solo career with his debut EP, Roll Sound, Roll Camera, produced by Grammy-nominated Edd Hartwell.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Superstar to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Luke Martin.
