Our obsession with The House Flies seems to grow with every listen. We last featured the band when they teased their new album and explored alienation and collapse with Derelict Crawl, so naturally we couldn’t wait to feature their latest release, Lost Literature.

Lost Literature opens with dimensional drums, cerebral textures and immersive synths manifesting with an almost melancholic expression. The opus expands with atmospheric vocals and an overarching hypnotic energy that reminds us of early Placebo and The Cure.

We appreciate the poetic prowess and the metaphorical depth of the prose, laced with vulnerability and emotional depth. There is something beautifully nocturnal about the composition. The track is danceable yet filled with shadowy catharsis. We are pulled into a world of low radio static, highway nights, rental cars and fragmented memories.

The lyrics are pretty open to interpretation and seem to circle around identity, memory and the strange feeling of becoming disconnected from who we once were. The repeated chorus becomes almost mantra-like, reinforcing that sense of memory looping back on itself.

There is no doubt that Lost Literature holds a cinematic allure. We could easily imagine it landing a sync placement in something like The Day of the Jackal, The White Lotus, Euphoria or The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Alex Riggen‘s vocals sit perfectly within the cohesive and ceremoniously immersive environment, delivering the repeated phrases with restrained intensity. The band describes this as one of the more immediate songs on Lions and Ore, and we can absolutely hear why. Lost Literature arrives as the second single from the band’s forthcoming seven-track album and their first full-length to document the current four-piece lineup of Alex Riggen, Burnie Eckhardt, Ozzie Woods and Nick Pompou.

Needless to say, we are once again completely captivated by The House Flies and have added Lost Literature to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream Derelict Crawl and anticipate the release of Lions and Ore.
