If there was a list for best EPs of the year, this would be placed firmly at the top. Thomston’s visual and sonic experience go hand in hand – note the video for Anaesthetic below. Granted he is 19, from New Zealand and signed to the same management – so by default he is subject to Lorde comparisons, which is fair, but not something Thomas Stoneman is actively courting.

Thomston takes a darker direction in tone and aesthetic – the lyrical content is layered and introspective, but also holds this sonic and almost contrasting romantic melancholia. It makes for exceptional sex music and 4.20 music.

First announced via an illustration (under the cut) back in March, the visual for Lorde’s M.A.C. collaboration has arrived – and she looks beyond beautiful. Photographed by Charles Howells, the image features a brooding Lorde wearing her products — lipstick in Pure Heroine, a deep plum first debuted on Lorde in the video for Tennis Court, and Penultimate Eye Liner in Rapidblack, a deep black. The lipstick retails for $16 and the Eye Liner for $19.50 internationally on the MAC website and at MAC stores.

“This video was borne from a dream i had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. i dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. and of this world, i dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”

Here is the video for Tennis Court from New Zealand native, Lorde (birth name: Ella Yelich-O’Connor). With understandable comparisons to Lana, Sky, Grimes, Regina Spektor and Marina, which is only ever a compliment in my eyes, the track has this narrative and compelling darkness lyrically which has been brought to life in the subtlest of ways – with a single shot video to which she doesn’t lip-synch. Instead, it all comes through in her eyes. As with any artist listening to their own art, the reaction and emotion evoked even with a camera on their face is truer than any staged reaction or high budget video.

Lorde is sixteen and already a household name in New Zealand. Universal has been backing her since she was 12 resulting in four years of strategy behind a product and artist that has the potential to be huge. You can also stream Lorde’s debut EP, The Love Club under the cut. Lorde’s debut album is set for release in September.
