Our obsession with Night Wolf and Lois Powell seems to grow with every listen. We previously featured the pair for their collaborative singles, Unstoppable, and Death of the Wolf, so when we learnt that they were back with The Laws of Life, our curiosity was piqued, and we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in their sonic universe once again.

The Laws of Life opens with a spiritual and cinematic energy with pizzicato nuances and orchestral strings before Lois Powell shares atmospheric vocals that remind us of early Björk. We are enthralled by the emotional depth of her delivery and the unique soundscape that Night Wolf has manifested.

The strings are sublime, and the textured drums create drama, whilst the synths and minor key melodies evoke a sense of mystery. Fans of Sevdaliza will also be able to connect with Lois’s delivery.

The Laws of Life resonates like a meditative mantra about self-realization and inner growth. The repeated lines “become known” and “be true” suggest a journey towards self-realization, whilst “be gracious” and “brave and strong” emphasize humility and resilience.

The contrast of “blue skies, war” feels highly zeitgeist, and hints at the coexistence of peace and struggle in personal development but also society. We appreciate the concepts of surrendering ego, confronting power, and redefining what holds authority in one’s life.

It’s absolutely brilliantly produced, again, perfect for sync placements – perhaps an episode of The Night Manager, or a dark psychological episode of Nine Perfect Strangers. The psychedelic nuances also cement this as a good placement opportunity.

Needless to say, we continue to be in awe of what Night Wolf and Lois Powell are creating, and have added The Laws of Life to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream Unstoppable, and Death of the Wolf!

We previously featured Night Wolf when he teamed up with Lois Powell to share a high emotional quotient with their introspective, cinematic and orchestral second collaboration, Death of the Wolf, so when we heard that pair had released a third collaboration, Unstoppable – the first being Lost My Way Home – we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in their universe again.

Unstoppable opens with a sublime strings arrangement, strummed, distorted acoustic guitar and choral vocal textures before Lois Powell sings, “I’ve been waiting for spring, wintery energies inspiring, I’ve been planning my dreams, going quiet, pushing things…”

With these lyrics in mind, the release date feels pertinent and aligned with the seasons. In essence, Unstoppable feels like notions of a quiet awakening. The concept invites stillness and reflection. It is about where dreams are formed in silence and patience becomes strength.

In this case, it is a metaphor for renewal, and clarity following hardship. Endurance comes through and at its heart, the song is about connection. The repeated desire to be with someone feels tender and sincere and the sentiment of love is healing.

Resilience and survival manifest, whilst the imagery of blue skies, open lungs and flowing blood filled with visions paints a picture of rediscovering vitality. Breathing becomes symbolic, and what began as waiting becomes unstoppable movement. It is empowering at its core.

This is cemented by the cinematic and expansive soundscape, which would be perfect for a coming-of-age or survival movie, like Dead of Winter on HBO Max, Netflix’s Firebreak or the recent TV show, 56 Days on Amazon Prime.

We deeply connect with the trip-hop, orchestral vibes with the choral male vocal synths, and the track feels like a cohesive fit with the pair’s previous two singles. Lois Powell is originally from the Herts and Beds border and is now based in Norfolk. She writes and performs with striking openness and emotional honesty, and BBC Introducing has praised her voice for its nuance and authenticity.

Night Wolf is a UK-based producer, sound designer, and engineer who creates cinematic, story-driven soundscapes blending trip hop and ambient textures. His work spans Netflix, Channel 4, Sky, MLB, and NFL, alongside a growing collection of independent releases. Unstoppable is available for licensing for online projects at payhip.com/b/OE1GB, and we have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists!

Establishing the mood with a dramatic strings arrangement, Night Wolf and Lois Powell open Death of the Wolf with a cinematic allure, a brooding presence, and the lyrics, “Coldly, I’m slowly crawling, they burn out the roof, I’ve served love with no proof…”

Punctuated with astral bell tones and luscious vocal harmonies, the pair manifest a haunting and cohesive tapestry of sound – elegant in its construction and perfect for a cerebral TV show sync deal such as Nine Perfect Strangers.

We are enthralled by the textured trip-hop drums that emerge and are also reminded of 90s trip-hop legends like Massive Attack and Portishead. We appreciate the intricacy of the composition as well as the poetic prowess of the conceptual prose.

In essence, Death of the Wolf is about inner struggle and self reflection. It explores notions of feeling lost, broken and at odds with oneself. We learn that the song came from a dark emotional place and was driven by instinct as opposed to concept. The creators confess how the lyrics and overarching orchestral energy focus on internal conflict, not a specific event or story.

Night Wolf says, “I wrote this song and finished it during a very difficult time in my life as my mother passed away, it drove me to complete the half finished song and allowed me to pour my sadness into it. I was also going back and forth to a local quiet church where they had a piano I was playing and a part came to me whilst there. However the lyrics are not reflecting this period and are not about the passing, the lyrics I wrote until Lois took over were very much a self reflection of how I felt or still feel.”

For some background, Night Wolf from Bedford and Lois Powell from Norfolk met at an open mic night. This is their second collaboration, following Lost My Way Home, and the second release on EscaVolt Records. It also marks Night Wolf’s move into self releasing after years with music publishers.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Death of the Wolf to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of both Night Wolf, and Lois Powell, and anticipate future solo and collaborative releases.

Establishing the mood with emotive and cinematic guitar arpeggios with a subtle breath, Lois Powell opens Who Am I Now? with introspective depth and a delicate, astral timbre as she sings, “Who am I now you’re gone? When rain clouds clear, bright skies beckon…”

We appreciate the poetic prowess, the raw authenticity and the high emotional quotient that manifest. Lois Powell reminds us of early Lana Del Rey songs, notably Shades of Cool. The instrumentation is stripped back yet sublime, bringing to life the poignancy of Lois’ reflective message of loss.

Her soulful nature and lived experience shine through, which of course is personal – specifically about her dog, but also feels universally relatable about death in general. The cinematic allure is tangible, perfect for a James Bond 007 film, or perhaps a Sofia Coppola or Luca Guadagnino release.

Lois confesses, “When my dog was put down I wrote this poem. I believe I sang this song to him before he died in anticipation. A few months later I got the poem out as mat chose some random chords and the song was born in the moment.”

We learn that Lois Powell is a singer-songwriter from Norfolk, England, who created Who Am I Now? alongside long-time collaborator Mat Roberts. The pair met at an open mic and went on to record multiple albums together using a spontaneous, improvisational approach.

The song was recorded at Effort Studios in Mat’s home, captured straight to tape using an analogue recorder, which gives it this warm and intimate sound. Her vocal delivery on Who Am I Now? has been widely compared to Joan Baez, particularly the emotive, deep and sensual tone heard in Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Who Am I Now? to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Lois Powell, including Lost My Way Home, and Pain.
