We last featured Sean MacLeod for the experimental and existentially boundary-pushing single, I Know Not, so when we heard that the visionary artist was back with Light Up The Sun, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his universe once more and share our experience.

Light Up The Sun opens with an intricate, acoustic guitar soundscape and a stripped-back energy as Sean sings, “Situation, turn it around, get your feet back on the ground, you packed your bags and now you’re going, but where you going, alone?”

We are always enthralled by the artist’s philosophical and metaphorical approach to song creation. Fans of Bowie and Dylan will be able to connect with Sean’s songwriting on Light Up The Sun. The song is inspiring at its core. It serves as an invitation to live our dreams and maximise our output on Earth.

The analogy is rather brilliant, and lyrics like “don’t forget that life is just a game, so play it well…” are poignant examples of Sean’s wisdom transmuted into song. A lot of us are told that we cannot be our most authentic selves, and so we deeply appreciate Sean MacLeod‘s uplifting message is to take chances and “never let it die.”

Light Up The Sun is taken from Sean’s album, New Start. For some background, Sean MacLeod is a former founding member of the Dublin-based band Cisco, which gained critical acclaim and international interest with their album No. 1, recorded with producer Paul Barrett.

After the band split, he pursued a solo career, releasing multiple singles and three albums of original music. His sound draws heavily from 1960s influences like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Motown, whilst blending in folk, classical, and avant-garde elements. Although his music features catchy pop melodies and rich harmonies, his lyrics often explore philosophical and spiritual themes.

We have added Light Up The Sun to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the entirety of New Start, and anticipate future releases from Sean!
