We previously featured Lauren Ash when she shared the ultimate breakup anthem with Cool Story, Bro, so when we heard that the rising star was back with F.A.F.O, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to experience the direction of the track!

For the record, F.A.F.O stands for “Fuck Around and Find Out“, and represents a warning that risky actions lead to severe, predictable consequences. The track opens with an exclamation of “Let’s go…” and high-octane pop punk energy.

Lauren kicks off with the situational and observational lyrics, “You think that you’re better than me, so boring makes me wanna sleep, personification of a yawn, and if you ask me what I think, I tell you that you’re just a dink, but you keep droning on and on… I spoke my mind, you punished me…”

The opus expands into the chorus with the rather poignant hook, and we are once again launched back into Lauren Ash‘s fierce and assertive world. She is a woman and an artist who knows exactly what she wants.

Speaking on the message of the track, Lauren confesses, “As a woman in the music industry, I have encountered my fair share of misogynists, mansplainers and the generally condescending. This song is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt like they just want to prove their doubters wrong.”

Fans of Avril Lavigne, Hole, and The Pretty Reckless will absolutely be able to vibe with what Lauren is creating, and there is no doubt that the song has a cinematic allure, perfect for a sync placement in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel, ELLE, or a remake of Clueless. Lauren also cites Paramore, and The Linda Lindas as sonic references.

We learn that the song was written alongside Robbie Brett, who also produced it, as well as rising artist Cindë, with drums by Zoe McMillan. It is no surprise that Lauren sold out nearly every show of her first headlining UK tour. The final moments of the track are a manifestation of the acronym itself and resonate like a mantra of empowerment.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added F.A.F.O to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Lauren Ash‘s exquisite, growing discography, and anticipate future releases from the rising star.

We recently featured Pathological by Lauren Ash, which served as a raw anthem of vulnerability, tapping into themes of mental health and healing, so when we found out that the rising star was back with the curiously titled, Cool Story, Bro, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience!

Cool Story, Bro opens with an extremely fierce, electric guitar soundscape with textured drums, as Lauren sings introspectively about her situation, once again referencing mental health and a human connection. The opus expands into a pop-punk anthem that we could imagine being played in the upcoming reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

We always appreciate Lauren’s authenticity and her assertive nature shines through as she sings, “I hope this finds you unwell… p.s. I hope you die soon…”. It’s giving ultimate breakup anthem levels of energy, whilst being cathartic and empowering in the vein of a pop-punk Taylor Swift vibe, but also a bit like early Avril Lavigne or even Alanis Morissette.

The lyrics are scathing, visceral and descriptive. What Lauren wants to manifest for her ex is quite unhinged, and that’s what makes it feel so real. The artist is writing in an unfiltered manner which will no doubt connect with fans, and invite growth and connection. In fact, it already has with previews of the song at live shows encouraging audience members to send clips to their exes! Damn.

With reference to the lyrical depth, Lauren says, “Cool Story, Bro is an amalgamation of the letters that we have all written to an ex in the weeks and months following a breakup but that you never actually send. [The] lyrics go from sad and almost pathetic to straight up brutal, mean, and petty.”

Cool Story, Bro is Lauren Ash‘s third single, collaborating with producing duo Aaron Verdonk and Jesse Colburn, and the emerging talent is set to release a full album later this year. In the meantime, we continue to stream Lauren Ash’s growing discography, and have added Cool Story, Bro to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist!

Lauren Ash’s Pathological offers a transformative experience, merging raw emotion with a conscious exploration of mental health struggles. The track opens with a cerebral riser, pulling the listener into a dimensional soundscape where the layers of atmospheric vocal design and ad-libs wash over the senses, setting an immersive tone. What captivates immediately is the spaciousness and mood, giving the song an expansive quality, as if it’s meant to echo through a stadium, stirring a crowd with relatable themes and a palpable sense of yearning.

The lyrics are a masterclass in metaphorical prose, deeply reflective of Ash’s internal world. There’s a stark vulnerability woven throughout the song, where each word feels like a delicate unveiling of her personal battles. The line between darkness and hope becomes blurry as she explores the fear of being truly seen – of revealing oneself beyond the surface. The pace of the track feels both deliberate and organic, allowing the listener to sit with the weight of the words without feeling rushed, which only enhances its emotional resonance.

Musically, the song occupies a space where pop, rock, and alt sensibilities collide, blending influences from modern artists like Charli XCX and Lorde with the punchiness reminiscent of early 2000s pop-punk. It’s as though Taylor Swift donned a biker jacket and took on the world with the emotional gravitas of Paramore – a rock star in her own right, but with a storyteller’s precision. The production by Jesse Colburn and Aaron Verdonk is clean yet atmospheric, offering moments of stripped-back rawness while building toward cathartic peaks. The layers of sound feel thoughtfully constructed, reinforcing the metaphorical weight of the lyrics.

Thematically, Pathological is more than just another song about mental health, it’s a deeply personal reflection on the neurodivergent experience. Releasing it during October, which is both ADHD Awareness Month and National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, adds another layer of significance. As Ash has shared, her own journey with anxiety and ADHD is central to the song’s narrative. The authenticity in her delivery is palpable, and her ability to articulate complex emotions – fear, isolation, self-doubt – through such relatable prose makes this track an anthem for anyone who has ever felt “too much” for the world to handle.

In many ways, Ash’s foray into music parallels the message of Pathological. As she puts it, her story as an established actor who has pursued music later in life speaks to the idea that it’s never too late to chase a dream. The song, like her career pivot, is both brave and inspiring, resonating with anyone who has dared to step into a new chapter of their life, despite the uncertainties.

Ash’s vulnerability isn’t just in the lyrics but in the very act of releasing this song – a departure from her earlier, lighter singles. This track, her fourth original, takes listeners deeper, offering a raw and unfiltered glimpse into her mental landscape. It’s a big shift from the polished veneer of her comedic TV roles, presenting a Lauren Ash that is not just an actor or a singer but a fully realized human being grappling with the complexities of life and identity.

In conclusion, Pathological feels like a statement – a declaration that no matter how established you may be in one part of your life, it’s never too late to chase a dream or share a more authentic version of yourself with the world. It’s a track that will resonate with fans of introspective, emotionally intelligent music, and its relatability and thematic depth make it a song that’s not just heard but felt.

Imagine this song filling the space of a massive stadium, where every person, from the front row to the nosebleeds, feels that deep sense of being seen. That’s the power of Pathological. We have added the opus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to explore Lauren Ash‘s wider discography!
