We recently reviewed Jon Sandman’s song Dear Friends, which served as an apology to his besties for creating distance. Today, the rising artist is back with a brand new track, Maybe, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Opening with an immersive risers, strings and cosmic textures, we are immediately mesmerized by Maybe, as ethereal vocals wash over us, Jon kicks of the narrative of the song, telling a cerebral story encouraging us to discard emotional baggage and trust our instincts in love.

Some lyrical highlights include the vulnerable, “if you’re not the one, you’re just playing a part, I know it won’t last, that’s what’s making this hard…”, the intimate “you whisper into my ear, words that I want to hear…”, and the profound “the scope of your love is deceptively large”.

On his Instagram, Jon posted a release-day photo of him in his bedroom with the caption, “Maybe is a chilled out folk-pop track with a big ol’ chorus – and it’s got those indie love song plus alternative acoustic rock vibes for fans of Sufjan, The National, The Antlers, Grizzly Bear etc.”

We love the references of Jon’s peers and influencers, and it also turns out that Maybe was reconstructed from an early demo after the original session was lost to a hard drive failure. We are consistently amazed by Jon’s vocal range from rich baritone to ethereal harmonies, as he recounts this sad but hopeful story, with pulsating textural synths that ebb and flow.

Maybe is the second single from Jon’s upcoming Spooky Action at a Distance EP, the first being Dear Friends, and we love his alt-rock band Pylon Heights and the music he created as indie-folk duo Jon & Abbie.
