We previously featured the John Muka Band for inviting us into notions of human connection and exploring desire with the dynamic single, More & More, so when we heard that the project was back with Bus Stop, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in their universe again.

Kicking off with the sound of thunder and rain, expanding with an emotion and dimensional soundscape with a folk-jazz adjacency, John Muka Band taps into ethereal notions for Bus Stop. John sings, “Calling out the radio station, summer’s got no intonation, hit the bus stop for information….”

We immediately connect with the layered vocals from Amy Hancock and the cinematic universe that manifests with the almost dystopian vibes. The track reminds us of some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ more emotional songs like Road Trippin’, Scar Tissue and Otherside, and also Counting Crows. The introspective prose comes to life with poetic prowess and we feel moved by the concept of the track, which was clearly written from a place of deep authenticity.

In essence, the song is about disconnection and our enduring need for genuine human connection. In that sense, it feels truly zeitgeist, though we learn it was originally written in the early 2000s in the aftermath of 9/11. Bus Stop obviously captures a period defined by fear and uncertainty, which also rings true today. It shows us the way people came together and reached beyond their normal boundaries and more than two decades later, its message feels almost prophetic.

As the band asks, “In a world where we are supposedly more connected than ever, where do we go when we are searching for real connection?” We could imagine Bus Stop soundtracking a late-night sequence in True Detective, a reflective road scene in The Leftovers, or one of those atmospheric moments in Twin Peaks.

For some context, John Muka Band is a Jacksonville-based collective led by singer-songwriter John Muka, bringing together indie rock, Americana, folk, jam traditions and soulful grooves. Their emphasis on real musicians interacting gives the project a warmth and spontaneity that feels increasingly refreshing within a digitally saturated musical landscape.

Needless to say, Bus Stop is a deeply resonant release that proves some songs can wait twenty years and somehow become even more relevant. We have added the track to our New Music Spotlight and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to immerse ourselves in the wider universe of John Muka Band.

Establishing the mood with a cerebral progressive-jazz energy, the John Muka Band opens More & More with dimensionality and instrumental mastery. The overarching energy of the composition is cinematic, laced with drama and intrigue, before we experience the lyrics, “Wait a minute that a girl now say, jump right in and let yourself go down, and I can spin it round and around, till we realize there ain’t no goin’ back now…”

In essence, More & More is a quintessential song about strong attraction, desire and wanting a deep connection with one’s muse. The John Muka Band shares about letting go of notions of fear, giving in to feelings, and enjoying the excitement of love and passion. This hedonism and escapist energy feels truly zeitgeist and a little bit of what we all need right now.

There is a sense of wanting someone to stay close forever. It’s charming at its core, with lines about wanting them to be “mine” and of course the hook of always wanting “more and more.” The lyrics are also mix of confidence, ambition and energy. They manifest as a feeling of chasing both love and bigger dreams and thinking about the object of one’s desire incessantly.

We love the dynamism of the track, and could imagine it in a sequel to a movie like The Mask, or a hedonistic remake of Sin City. The John Muka Band is made up of John Muka on acoustic guitar and vocals, Troy Towsley on bass guitar and vocals (his presence and high octane flow is simply out of this world!), Amy Hancock on vocals, Greg Lyles on saxophone, TR Zielinski on violin, Robert Orr on drums and vocals, Dave Welch on keyboards, Dennis Morgan on slide guitar, Paul Locke on lead guitar, Hayden Schott on trumpet, Shayden Zona on trombone, and Sol Villafañe on percussion.

The instruments are all given their time to shine, but the violin solo is simply transcendental – creating a high emotional quotient for the piece. Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added More & More to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the John Muka Band, including the entirety of their 2025 album, Things I Can’t Change.
