Establishing the mood with an electric guitar soundscape and crooning vocals with a captivating timbre, Jay Saint James opens Cheap Rosé with poetic prowess as he sings, “Pretty eyes, gazing the other way, can I have a penny to borrow for your thoughts? Party dress camouflaging promises now torn and wrinkled on the floor…”

We immediately connect with Jay Saint James‘s lyrical universe and the cinematic allure of the track. Jay paints a vivid picture of a pseudo melancholic reflection on a relationship. The connection appears to be built on attraction, deception, and emotional damage, and Jay poignantly uses the image of Cheap Rosé as a symbol of fleeting comfort that isn’t that deep.

The lyrics juxtapose moments of tenderness with betrayal, portraying love as both intoxicating and destructive while questioning whether either person was ever capable of giving the other what they truly needed. The writing is poetic and metaphor driven, and fuses chilled conversational observations with visual manifestations and symbolic motifs that fans of songwriters like Lana Del Rey, Damien Rice, and Conor Oberst would vibe with.

Speaking on the release, Jay confesses, “Cheap Rosé is a deeply personal song for me. It was written while a relationship was teetering on the brink and my partner didn’t want to address our decline. I wrote it as a plea to be seen and heard. It’s a snapshot of a couple on the verge of collapse.”

We love this authenticity and could see the track landing sync placements in films like Blue Valentine, and Once, or a show like Normal People. The emotional quotient is tangible, and the fact that Jay wrote this from such a raw and real place really shines through.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Cheap Rosé to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Jay Saint James‘s wider discography, including She’s The Pope, Lavender, and Under The Sun.
