We recently featured James Fiori (J-Priori) when he invited us to explore his raw and authentic sonic universe with anime super hero inspired track, Power. After this, we had a dig through the rising star’s archive and discovered his track, Oceans, which we wanted to spotlight!

Oceans opens with a stunning synth-strings arrangement, intertwined with astral harps, immediately drawing us into a cosmic universe aligned with the title of the track – the depths of the Oceans. We feel like we are in the opening moments of an epic sea-based adventure film – perhaps a sequel to Aquaman.

The opus is poignant and masterful at the same time. Coming in at a mere one minute and twenty-six seconds, it is surprising how much emotion we feel. The ocean is a mysterious place, less explored than space itself. This intrigue and dimensionality really comes through in the composition.

There is a sense of wonderment as the harp reminds us of ripples and the strings take on a mood of their own, like fish, sharks and whales swimming beneath the surface. James cites influences ranging from Disney films to video games and esteemed composers like John Williams and Thomas Newman, which certainly manifests in his work.

We can see his catalogue being used for massive blockbusters, which is the type of platform that he truly deserves. Oceans is designed to transport us to “a realm of mystery and beauty, evoking imagery of enchanting creatures navigating through the depths of the sea.”

We learn that the track was recorded entirely at home without the use of samples, testament to James’s self-taught talent and dedication to his craft. Naturally, we will continue to explore James Fiori (J-Priori)‘s growing discography and keep our ears peeled for his compositions making waves in the movie universe!

Drawing us in with a bold, rhythmic synth, expanding into a dimensional soundscape that features astral melodies, industrial guitar and textured drums with a cerebral adjacency, James Fiori (J-Priori) opens Power with a sentiment of raw dynamism.

The opus has ebbs and flows between clarity and subversion with an overarching high octane vibe. There are 8-bit moments that feel like a retro video game and other more serene elements that feel like we are in a Parisian jazz club.

The piece is succinct in nature, but boundless in its composition. There is a lot to absorb and the fierce and assertive mood of the composer transmutes. The title of the track is fitting for the soundscape, and we are enthralled by the severity fused with ambience.

With reference to Power specifically, James Fiori (J-Priori) confesses that the track has been designed to embody the theme of “a super hero anime scene, where the protagonist is gearing up for a battle against formidable foes.”

We learn that the opus was recorded entirely at home using his instruments and computer, showcasing James’s hands-on approach to music production. We are also grateful to know that the piece is part of a wider set titled, Physics, which features a fusion of genres, energies and a mix between the cerebral and the classical!

James cites influences including Yes, Led Zeppelin, Joe Satriani, and Madeo, which certainly comes through in his work, although there is no doubt that the rising star is manifesting a universe of his own. He tells us, “I am completely self taught musically and have never had any lessons or training and I play by ear.” This authenticity really shines though is his compositions!
