Setting the tone with a cerebral guitar soundscape featuring an astral pinch harmonic, Ivy and the Poison opens i wanna f my roommate with a captivating timbre and a gripping narrative as she shares the situational lyrics, ” Watching TV, sharing the space, almost no space between us, your knee is on my knee, my heart starts to race, I want to stroke your pean/ut butter coloured hair, I wanna touch you then and there…”

We are obsessed with the poetic prowess and the clever innuendos. The production has a raw and authentic pop-punk vibe with a cinematic allure. We could imagine the song being featured in a TV show like Euphoria, or My Life with the Walter Boys. The metaphors are pretty visceral, which is quite refreshing. The way the instruments pull out as she sings, “I want you…. to wash the dishes…” is extremely innovative and we are hypnotized by the comedic vibes that manifest.

In a live setting this would be incredible to experience. The theatrical adjacency of the middle eight is another riveting touch with spoken word motifs before a self-realized moment and final mantra that Ivy and the Poison will tap into her inner peace and control her lustful ways.

Knowing that i wanna f my roommate is the opening chapter of a 12-song rock opera(!) about “a woman navigating love in New York City and eventually mistaking a sociopath for her soulmate” makes the track even more intriguing. We learn that this serves as the starting point for a much darker journey involving obsession, manipulation and identity reclamation. It’s no surprise that My Chemical Romance is one of Ivy’s references, cemented by the theatricality combined with confessional intimacy. The rising artist, also known as Netta Toledano also cites Mitski and Bo Burnham as influences, which we can absolutely feel come to life.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added i wanna f my roommate to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate the remaining eleven elements of Ivy and the Poison‘s project!
