Drawing us in with a cerebral and layered frequency crescendo, expanding into a luscious and emotive alternative rock soundscape, Dani LaCour opens her EP, In My Rearview, with dimensionality, intrigue and a track called Pot and the Kettle.

The Lake Charles-based artist shares the assertive prose, “You’ve got a lot of nerve coming back to me, yeah you pushed me so far down I can barely breathe, and you are every girl’s dream, complete, until you don’t get what you want and then it’s misery…”

Dani reminds us of early Alanis Morissette, based on her lyricism and evocative timbre. The track evolves with a captivating, metaphorical hook and message of self-realized worth. The track is empowering with lyrics like, “You can keep trying, but I ain’t buying…”. There is no doubt that Dani knows who she is and that this EP has been created with intention.

The guitar performances are raw and expressive, manifesting in a dope and dynamic tapestry of sound. We appreciate the anthemic hooks that make up the middle eight as Dani sings, “Liar liar, your time’s expired, liar, liar, I’m coming for you…”. This is followed by an epic guitar solo and a stadium-ready final reprise.

This brings us to Praying in a Bathroom Stall, which taps into narrative-driven storytelling with an Americana vibe. It feels perfect for a multitude of sync placements, notably a Hollywood movie set in the Deep South, or a coming of age TV show like Ginny & Georgia.

Next up, Dani LaCour slows it down with My Broken Heart. The track taps into high emotional quotient as Dani sings, “It wasn’t supposed to end up like this, we were supposed to be in love, not just some one night kiss…”. We love the charisma that Dani delivers and we could imagine this being featured in the upcoming reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. We love the raw authenticity that Dani performs with.

Jealous opens with an astral Hammond organ, and feels euphoric from the outset, reflective of Dani’s state of mind as she sings, “They say Dani, we’ve noticed, you’ve been losing the closest people you keep around, and my response is that the truth can be a bitch, and it took me too long to see…”

This is followed by the assertion, “You didn’t wanna be my friend, you wanted to be me…”. As a culture that is becoming more self-realized this is a big theme for artists. Many have lost friends to jealousy, bitterness, monitoring spirits and so on and so forth. It is brave of Dani to share this message, but also very real and authentic. Dani’s wisdom shines through and she sings about choosing love and peace in the face of those who choose anger and jealousy. It’s a playful bop that shows how Dani is at peace with who she is and the decisions that she has made!

This leads us to Man of Mine which opens with a nostalgic aura as Dani sings how she finally found a man who is willing to put in the work! It’s a great love song, and perfect for those of us who are in healthy relationships.

Backbone is the final song on the EP, and shares a tale of disrespect that Dani experiences. We do not know who the “bitter” muse is in this song, but it is a vulnerable track, so it is likely to be someone close to Dani. The lyrics also hark back to what we mentioned about monitoring spirits in an artist’s reality. Dealing with haters can be exhausting, so experiencing this song feels super cathartic for both artist and listener. Again, this track has an epic guitar interlude and holds an emotional depth that feels super inspiring. The final lyrics are the title of the EP as Dani sings that she is leaving her past “in my rearview…”. This is brilliant artistry.

Speaking on the album, Dani confesses, “In My Rearview is a chapter of my life I’m finally ready to share. These six songs hold the pain, the healing, and the moments where I learned to choose myself again. If you’ve ever loved deeply, lost yourself, or found new strength on the other side, this album is for you.”

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Pot and Kettle, and Praying in a Bathroom Stall to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Dani LaCour‘s wider discography, including Girl, andHard Fought Hallelujah.
