We recently featured Headrush for his boundary reinforcing single, not my job, so we were thrilled to hear that the rising artist from Massachusetts had just released a new track, blank slate.

Setting the vibe with a textured electric guitar and riser, evolving into an pop-punk hybrid soundscape, Headrush opens blank slate with the lyrics, “I’ve been half asleep for so long, I can barely speak but we keep on going…”

Speaking on the track, Headrush aka Jack Warren says, “blank slate is an indie-pop anthem inspired by the nail-biting eagerness to graduate and get out of a given place to move on to new experiences.”

We love the dimensional production with bright high synth details laced into the guitars, bass, percussion and drums. “A tired hungry soul waiting to be free…” sings Jack emotively as he longs for freedom.

Expanding on the message of blank slate, Headrush says, “After four years of grinding day in and day out, high school has left me feeling lost; in a sleep-like trance. I’m tired of seeing the same people every day. I’m sick of pacing through the same routine every week. I need to do something different; something meaningful with my life.”

“With graduation inching ever closer, I eagerly await the moment when I can finally wake up; when I can finally feel free. blank slate is meant to encapsulate the feeling of freedom that we all yearn for, while simultaneously capturing the feeling of longing that we carry when we are trapped. The lyrics use sleep as a metaphor for these two feelings, with fatigue representing entrapment and alertness representing freedom”, continues Jack as he emotively explains the song to us.

Jack’s diverse taste in music converges into his unique indie rock sound, taking inspiration from many emo, punk, and alternative bands of the 1990s and early 2000s, but it is clear that he is creating a sound and energy of his own.

Cementing their foothold in emotional awareness, the songwriter, instrumentalist and producer, also known as Jack Warren, knows what he deserves.

The track builds with emotion and refined pop production with a great mix and production clarity and dimensionality. The intro hook repeats as a chorus before the artist slays a guitar solo.

Headrush reminds listeners that it’s not their job to put up with one-sided relationships. Speaking on the song, Headrush says, “Don’t you hate being caught up in a relationship where you are giving so much to another person, only for none of it to be reciprocated? Not only is this kind of thing soul-crushing, but it also happens a lot more than we would like to admit.“

“After I realized I was in a situation like this, I gathered myself and got out of it. That’s when I wrote this song. It’s not anyone’s job to dedicate themselves to another person just to get nothing in return.”

Headrush is the solo project of songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer Jack Warren. Headrush started in his basement on the South Shore of Massachusetts in 2019. Since then, Jack has been honing in on his production and songwriting skills, with each of his releases being stronger than the last.
