We recently featured the visionary Gianfranco Malorgio for exploring Italian emigration, displacement and the search for a new life through cinematic guitar work on An Immigrant’s Story, so when we heard that the artist was back with GREASEBALL, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

GREASEBALL opens with a brooding and immersive synthscape with cerebral textures. It feels healing and warm, and expands with rhythmic percussion claps and a dramatic, cinematic piano performance featuring subversive mid-frequency synths. An electric guitar captivates us as the production builds, and needless to say we are in awe.

Fans of Santana would be able to connect with the guitar work and the intricacy that manifests, whilst the wider composition is more haunting. A cosmic organ emerges to tap into that dark-wave energy and we feel like we are in the opening moments of an episode of the new Carrie show on Amazon Prime, inspired by the Stephen King novel. The final moments showcase a bell toll which complements the original message of the composition.

Beneath its atmospheric production, however, GREASEBALL carries a deeply significant message. The composition forms the final instalment of Malorgio’s trilogy exploring human migration, following WOP and An Immigrant’s Story. Its title is a historical ethnic slur directed at Italian immigrants and their descendants, a word loaded with the prejudice, humiliation and hostility that many migrants have endured while attempting to build new lives in unfamiliar places.

The music itself feels like an emotional landscape shaped by uncertainty, resilience and the longing for belonging. The piano introduces a dramatic, almost film-noir sensibility, whilst the synthesizers create a sense of isolation and disorientation. Against this backdrop, Moreno Viglione‘s electric guitar performance becomes a compelling emotional voice.

We can imagine GREASEBALL accompanying a powerful sequence in films such as The Godfather Part II, Once Upon a Time in America, The Immigrant, Brooklyn, The Green Mile or The Pianist. The darker electronic dimensions could also complement television dramas like The Sopranos, The Alienist, Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story and The X-Files.

Needless to say, we continue to be in awe of Gianfranco Malorgio‘s work and have added the composition to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream An Immigrant’s Story.
