Establishing the mood with a textured drum riff and dimensional jazz-funk-adjacent soundscape, East Collectors open Flashback with a sublime pop vocal from Guðrun Sólja and the lyrics, “I always dreamed what I could be, but were the dreams too big for me? Sent my heart out every day, hoping I could find my way…”

We are immediately enthralled by the narrative and the poetic prowess of the song. We love the intricate sound design nuances and the build of the track which brings us to the conceptual chorus, “Flashback to the Summer of ’95…”.

In essence, the song is about looking back at the dreams, emotions and moments that help shape who we become. East Collectors tell us it is “inspired by the imagination and ambition of youth”. We appreciate the cinematic allure of the track, and could see it landing sync placements in a come-up film like Inside Llewyn Davis, Whiplash, A Star Is Born, or Crazy Heart.

The feel-good energy is transcendental, rooted in the unmistakably Scandinavian spirit of the project, and the contributions of Danish bassist, producer and songwriter Jimmy Østbygaard and Danish songwriter Chris Chordz, who has established himself as co-writer of the 2025 Danish Eurovision entry Hallucination.

The track feels deeply human and the message can definitely inspire someone to chase their dreams. The charismatic inflections that Guðrun Sólja delivers are exquisite, and her delivery switch-up for the chord change leading towards the cosmic finale of the song is exhilarating. The escapist notions feel highly zeitgeist at a time when so many of us need someone to remind us to chase our dreams.
