Drawing us in with a rippling electric guitar, expanding with textured 80s drums and a sublime melodic performance, Filip Dahl opens Flying High with the instrumental precision and high emotional quotient that we have come to love and expect from the visionary artist and composer. The track holds a cinematic allure, perfect for the opening credits of a movie like Top Gun, Blade Runner, or The Lost Boys.

After the first ninety seconds, we experience a more sublime and peaceful energy; ethereal and almost meditative in its manifestation. This allows for more introspection and also allows the details of the drums and the acoustic guitar to really shine through. Just before the third minute, Filip flips the chords, inviting further dimensionality into the piece before an epic electric guitar solo that showcases the artist’s incredible skill and truly emotes the astral energy of the piece, indeed inviting us to fly high.

Flying High comes with a brilliant performance video which showcases Filip Dahl performing electric, bass, and acoustic guitars as well as synths to demonstrate his multi-instrumental nature, and how each instrumental is integral to the composition. These types of videos have become a signature of the composer, and serve not only as entertainment but manifest with an educational purpose. He says, “For anyone that is not previously familiar with me as an artist, I believe that Flying High will be a great introduction to me, my guitar playing and my music.”

We deeply appreciate the work of the Norwegian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and former rock guitarist, and learn that Filip Dahl later became a respected producer and co-founder of Brygga Studio, before returning as a solo artist in 2016 after a long break. Since his comeback, he has released self-produced music across prog, blues, and symphonic rock, and also co-founded the family band Transcending Into the Unknown, blending diverse styles including neoclassical and death metal.

Needless to say, we are in awe and highly inspired by Flying High, and have added the composition to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the growing discography of Filip Dahl, and anticipate future releases from the visionary artist.

Drawing us in with a dimensional soundscape with an 80s adjacency, featuring astral guitar, textured drums and intertwined melodies, Filip Dahl opens Learning to Breathe Again with cinematic allure. We have previously featured a slew of the artist’s releases, and have always come to expect instrumental mastery and intention with what Filip shares. Needless to say, Learning to Breathe Again is no exception.

There is a high emotional quotient that comes to life with the piece. It would be perfect for a range of sync deals – perhaps the score to a major Hollywood coming-of-age movie. The guitar performances are out of this world. Fans of Dire Straits would be able to connect with what Filip is creating.

The composition comes to life as a cohesive tapestry of sound, laced with sonic nuances, intricate detailing and an overarching sentiment of warmth and timeless comfort. The repeated notions almost serve as a mantra, and when we reflect on the title of the track, this makes sense more than ever.

We deeply connect with the calm and immersive feel of the composition. At a time when society feels like it is in upheaval and turmoil, a reminder to breathe feels zeitgeist and important. Learning to Breathe Again is about finding healing, and inner balance. Its soothing and immersive sound reflects the idea of slowing down, breathing deeply, and recovering from stress, grief, illness, or emotional hardship. The song also represents the artist’s personal journey toward renewal and peace.

Filip Dahl is a Norwegian composer and multi-instrumentalist. He began as a rock guitarist in the 70s and later became a respected engineer and producer, co-founding Brygga Studio in Trondheim. After a long break, he returned as a solo artist in 2016, and has since released a steady flow of self-produced music influenced by prog, blues rock, and symphonic rock.

Since his comeback, Filip Dahl has also formed the family band Transcending Into the Unknown with his brother and son. The group blends blues rock, prog, neoclassical and death metal. Their work, along with Dahl’s solo releases, has earned critical praise for its creativity and his recognisable guitar signature.

Naturally, we have added Learning to Breathe Again to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Filip Dahl and Transcending Into the Unknown!

Filip Dahl’s new opus, If You Saw Me Now, is a profound and evocative journey into the depths of human emotion, masterfully conveyed through timeless rock balladry. Opening with an atmospheric vocal that announces the title, Dahl immediately sets a contemplative tone, drawing listeners into a reflective soundscape that feels both intimate and universal. The emotive guitar work, an ethereal fusion of precision and passion, shapes the heart of the song, reminding us of the authenticity and innovation of legends like David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles.

From its opening moments, the song captures our attention with a melodic depth that transcends time. The chords are simultaneously nostalgic and fresh, carrying an introspective weight that invites contemplation. Dahl’s ability to craft a soundscape that feels expansive yet personal is a testament to his genius as a composer and guitarist. Like the works of Pink Floyd or The Eagles, the track envelops us in a sonic embrace, where every note feels deliberate and every pause resonates with meaning.

The emotional quotient of If You Saw Me Now is undeniably high. Dahl’s vocal delivery is vulnerable yet assured, perfectly mirroring the song’s lyrical themes of mental health struggles and resilience. The lyrics – poignant and deeply personal – offer a window into the human experience, addressing feelings of despair, anxiety, and the enduring fight against inner darkness. Lines like “The darkest clouds will never blow away, if I never let the pale sun shine down on me” are both haunting and hopeful, encapsulating the tension between vulnerability and strength.

Midway through, the track shifts gears, introducing a meditative interlude that is nothing short of stunning. The soundscape becomes ethereal, almost transcendent, as Dahl’s guitar takes center stage in a solo that is otherworldly in its execution. Here, echoes of Santana’s soulful phrasing and the precision of The Eagles’ guitar harmonies come to mind. Dahl’s playing is both technical and emotive, demonstrating his unparalleled ability to balance complexity with accessibility.

If You Saw Me Now is quintessential Filip Dahl – an artist unafraid to bare his soul and push the boundaries of guitar-based rock. The track’s structure, from its atmospheric opening to its meditative middle and magnificent outro, highlights Dahl’s signature style: a blend of melodic sophistication and raw emotional power. His influences are evident but never derivative; instead, they serve as a foundation for a sound that is uniquely his own.

The outro, a crescendo of emotion and musicality, leaves us yearning for more. It’s a perfect conclusion to a song that feels like both a journey and a destination. Dahl’s ability to craft such an evocative ending speaks to his mastery as a storyteller, one who uses his guitar as much as his voice to communicate.

At its core, If You Saw Me Now is a statement about the struggles we all face and the strength required to overcome them. Dahl’s honesty in addressing mental health adds a layer of authenticity that resonates deeply. The accompanying lyric video further amplifies the song’s impact, turning it into both an auditory and visual experience.

Filip Dahl’s If You Saw Me Now is a triumph – a timeless rock ballad that cements his reputation as one of the most talented composers and guitarists of his generation. With its emotive lyrics, transcendent guitar work, and masterful soundscape, the track stands as a testament to the healing power of music. It’s a song that not only showcases Dahl’s artistry but also speaks to the shared human experience, offering solace and inspiration to anyone navigating life’s challenges. This is Dahl at his best: honest, inventive, and utterly unforgettable. We have added the opus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the star’s growing discography.

Our obsession with composer Filip Dahl seems to grow with every listen, so when we heard that the visionary creator was back with I Still See You, we were curious and couldn’t wait to share our experience.

Drawing us in with an astral guitar performance and a warm, arpeggiated soundscape, I Still See You opens with raw and unfiltered emotion, taking us on a journey with textured percussion before the star shares a brooding vocal and the words, “Can you remember me and how we used to be?”

We appreciate the tangible authenticity that Filip Dahl shares with his lyricism, and there is no doubt that fans of Leonard Cohen and The Beatles‘ iconic song, Yesterday, will be able to connect to the melodic elements of the piece.

The opus switches up about a third of the way through, to take us on a higher octane journey as Filip shares his soul and wisdom with us. The bassline is immaculate and we never cease to be amazed by Filip’s versatility as an artist. An instrumental flute segment hypnotizes us further before an extravagant guitar solo finale!

We learn that I Still See You was inspired by Filip’s feelings that “years seems to be passing by in an increasingly rapid pace as we are growing older, and that we cannot stop the time and draw a final line just to prevent this from happening.”

How Filip translates his philosophies into timeless and intricate compositions is nothing short of a world class effort, and we continue to be in awe of his artistic growth.

We have added I Still See You to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Filip Dahl‘s wider discography, and anticipate future releases from the star.

Setting the mood with exquisite electric guitar, and brought to life with a cinematic visual, Filip Dahl opens his new single Cry of a Broken Heart with sublime intricacy, demonstrating not only Filip’s prowess as a multi-instrumentalist, but also his emotive energy as an artist.

We are hypnotized as the Norwegian soloist from Trondheim takes us on a journey with this detailed composition.

Cry of a Broken Heart is an eloquent and transcendental, guitar based, ballad composed and performed solely by Filip Dahl. The track begins almost unplugged, with only lead guitar. It expands with piano and additional acoustic guitar, which we can see Filip play in the video!

The expansion of the song is eloquent and emotional, reminiscent of Dire Straits and 90s prog rock. The song is also exactly 4 minutes 20 seconds in length, how iconic.

Filip Dahl started his music career as lead guitarist in various Norwegian rock bands back in the 70’s, before moving on to become a recognized engineer and record producer.

Filip has created three solo albums solely composed, performed, recorded and produced by himself. The album “Dark Angels and White Demons” was released in 2016, “A Fire Through the Night” in 2018 while “Translucent Dreams of an Opaque Mind” was released in the fall of 2020. The tracks on all three albums spans from melodic prog rock to harmonic and symphonic rock, clearly revealing his roots and influences by bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Kansas, Marillion and Dream Theater.

Critics have especially highlighted and acclaimed Filip Dahl’s lead guitar work, which also includes E-bow and acoustic guitar solos, as it is characterised by a distinct style and tone which is contributing to a very clear and easily recognisable signature.

Filip released six new songs in 2021, and his musical journey continues in 2022 with the release of the enigmatic guitar based instrumental ballad Cry of a Broken Heart.

We have been immersing ourselves in Filip’s wider discography including Nightfall in a Multi Colored Evening Sky and Time is Ticking Like a Clock, and Cry of a Broken Heart has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
