We previously featured LOGICA ABSTRACTA’s Headspace Station which served as a monumental sonic journey into cosmic introspection and transcendence, so when we heard that the talented Vadim Militsin was back with Ad Astra, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

For some context, Ad Astra is a Latin phrase that translates as “to the stars”. It’s often used metaphorically, suggesting the pursuit of high ideals, ambition, or reaching for something extraordinary. 

The opus opens with a cosmic, meditative energy inviting us to feel at peace and oneness with the universe. The dimensionality of the composition is nothing short of divine. We are immersed into a transcendental mood once again, reminding us that we are part of the cosmos.

Ad Astra is perfect for meditation, or an immersive yoga class – perhaps Yin or Hatha yoga – the pace invites introspection and the glistening dynamism and fully cohesive vibrancy is refined, elegant and celestial.

The piece comes with a moody and cinematic visual that brings to life the nature of the composition – showing a psychedelic and futuristic side to the holographic universe with nods to sacred geometry. It comes in at a mere three minutes and twenty-two seconds, which does leave us yearning for more – just as well, LOGICA ABSTRACTA‘s sonic universe is expanding and Ad Astra comes with an entire EP’s worth of work!

Ad Astra follows LOGICA ABSTRACTA‘s full-length album Headspace Station and is designed to help us relax or focus. Speaking on the release, Vadim says, “The small film pays tribute to sci-fi movies of old. It was created without 3D or A.I. and with minimum of computer effects, mostly being a shadow theatre and an audio-visual installation.”

The release (out in full on April 13) lands after a special guest appearance for Nadine Shah at London’s Roundhouse, and follows her Coup Coup Coup EP, which arrived towards the back end of 2017. The EP was again mixed by Brian Eno’s longstanding guitarist Leo Abrahams, producer of recent album releases by Regina Spektor, Editors, and Ghostpoet respectively.

FKA Twigs just released her newest EP, M3LL155X with a rather stunning set of videos to accompany. The brilliantly constructed sixteen minute short film includes all of the tracks on the EP – my personal highlight being the appearance of Michele Lamy who is also set to feature in one of ASAP Rocky’s upcoming videos.

If there was a list for best EPs of the year, this would be placed firmly at the top. Thomston’s visual and sonic experience go hand in hand – note the video for Anaesthetic below. Granted he is 19, from New Zealand and signed to the same management – so by default he is subject to Lorde comparisons, which is fair, but not something Thomas Stoneman is actively courting.

Thomston takes a darker direction in tone and aesthetic – the lyrical content is layered and introspective, but also holds this sonic and almost contrasting romantic melancholia. It makes for exceptional sex music and 4.20 music.

Introducing Danish indie trip-hop trio Mont Oliver, consisting of Jakob Hammershøj, Niels Christian Sommer and Mads Bernt Pedersen. The trio delivers a cinematic raw percussion trip hop infused offering akin to the quality and sonic energy that we’ve seen from Dev Hynes. Vocals are provided by trio member Jacob Hammershøj.

The EP will be released for free on 17th November for free download via Fake Diamond Records, in the meantime stream the title track above.

Following the teaser tracks Sunday Amané and The Wilhelm Twice, Sasha Keable today unveiled her EP, BLACK BOOK available for free download.

The jazz-synth r’n’b vocal-led EP features eight(!) tracks with seamless and eloquent production – considering she is working with Justin Parker and Dev Hynes on a broader/album level, you can imagine the sound that this teases to deliver. Firm favourites being Lights, Spoke To Myself (which is frankly unreal) and Tempting As You Are.

Majandra Delfino was best known for her role as Maria Deluca in Roswell, whilst the series was on air, she released The Sicks, a six-track EP (featuring Ski-ming, Bruises, Oil & Water, Siren, Tattoo and Hell & Bliss) on her own record label, Dripfeed – on, wait for it, Halloween of 2001. Every single track was perfection and ahead of its time. It is SUCH an underrated record. She followed it up with Tarte in 2007, but The Sicks has this unparalleled raw darkness to it, lyrically and creatively that cannot be touched. If you’re in America, you can still download both on iTunes, if you’re anywhere else, your best bet is trolling YouTube (I’ve made it easier by creating a six-track playlist below), unless Majandra reads this (in which case she should absolutely put both records out on SoundCloud or for free download because they deserve to be heard). Even the artwork was on point.

The EP is five tracks – which all tell a story collectively. Without giving too much away, it goes as follows. The opener is Pink Fields which Neon took the inspiration from a literal pink field on her travels in the UK and wrote at Stonehenge, the production is incomparable and immediately from the opening, the sound is much darker than the Neon that has graced the Billboard charts. Hitch has been working with the likes of Happy Perez (who produced the whole EP), Darkchild and Benny Blanco – and the value of this track (and every other track) is pretty much untouchable. The second track is called Midnight Sun, and features audio excerpts and vocals (yes VOCALS) from Marilyn Monroe singing “I just want to be loved by you”, along with the lyrics “he wants to fuck me like a rock star”. Track three is called Believe – with an incredible catchy chorus, dubstep vibe, claps and can be taken to be the “freedom/inspiration” track from the EP, it includes sample from The Wizard of Oz. With the fourth track Jailhouse, the EP takes a darker turn, with issues with the label rising to the surface somewhat (her album Beg, Borrow, and Steal still doesn’t have an exact release date). Finally, Born To Be Remembered – no autotune, truly hero-ing her vocals, a slower pace and pretty much perfection.

Below is the EP artwork, which is the caravan where Hitch grew up. The EP drops on 14 January and Pink Fields has a video directed by PotsNPans – preview below. Oh and Neon has recorded a track with A$AP Rocky which should be on his next EP or album – 2013 is definitely going to be her year.
