Drawing us in with a dimensional, tribal-adjacent beat, Jenny Maybee opens Eat the Ash with spiritual toms, astral bells and atmospheric vocal ad libs with an orchestral strings riff before singing, “Call me every time that you think of me… I know I’m on your mind, I set you free…”

We appreciate the dynamism in the soundscape and the assertive delivery of the prose. The instrumental feels dramatic and brings to life the confidence that flows through the message of the song.

“I put myself in these glorious chains, I’ll take it all off for you, I have no shame…” cries Jenny Maybee as she takes us on a seductive journey with metaphors of fire and flames – offering to “ride the veins of your desire…”

There is a sensual nature at stake here, and Eat the Ash boasts a dangerous energy which draws us into the eclectic artist’s universe in a manner which proves to be the sexiest record on the album thus far. The stunning layered harmonies are simply sublime and as always, Jenny Maybee shows us what Grammy level song creation sounds like.

The star tells us, “Eat the Ash is about burning everything you thought you needed in order to feel free—and then devouring what’s left. It’s a song of total surrender, total power, and soul-level transformation. It’s a sonic offering to whatever forces dare to meet you at your full intensity. It’s about love so big it breaks you open… and makes you more eternal because of it.”

Jenny Maybee cites Massive Attack, Sevdaliza, and Nine Inch Nails as sonic inspirations for the track which manifests in the trip-hop nuance, the darker elements and the visceral raw nature. She also mentions “a cinematic experience akin to Björk‘s dreams” – this comes through with the more experimental detailing.

The song was recorded once again at The Mad Scientist Studios in Sebastopol, California, where “the recording process embraced restraint, ensuring that every sound earned its place, resulting in a spellbinding and unforgettable musical journey”.

Naturally, we have added Eat the Ash to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Jenny Maybee, and anticipate the release of her album in full!
