Lana Del Rey’s Once Upon A Dream

After Beyonce performed SURFBOARDT, the 56th annual Grammy awards were kinda rendered irrelevant (aside from Lorde’s acceptance speech) until the ‘Dream’ trailer (below) from Disney’s Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie aired. Oh yeah, and it features a cover of Once Upon A Dream by this little known indie artist called Lana Del Rey.

Ok back to reality. Three days ago it was officially announced that Lana would be covering the Disney classic and anticipation/expectations was/were high. She obviously delivered – as if there was even any question. It’s haunting, brilliant, staying true to the original and to Lana. Like, you couldn’t even have imagined it to be any more flawless.

Angel Haze is amazing. The Woodkid remix of I Love You was a smart move, she’s aligning with the right people – hello, Natalia Kills, BUT the music as a concept has been sporadic to say the least. Until now. Haze just “did a Beyonce” and dropped her first album-cum-mixtape for free. It’ called Reservation and you can get it here.

The benefits of having some of the most creative people in the world in your circle of friends is, well, beneficial – especially when they deliver (free) albums for download that actually surpass the calibre of 90% of music in the actual charts.

Simon Curtis has a musical history that sets him apart from the crowd by a long shot, he’s a pioneer, a true Gen Y digital entrepreneur who has created and amassed a fan base through the curation and creation of standout pop. No videos (yet), no PR stunts, no bullshit. Everything he has earned is based on product alone.

Today Simon unveiled WWW – a mini album made up of songs that he previously pitched to other artists including Girls Generation, Kesha, Madonna, Rihanna, Big Time Rush, The Wanted etc. It follows his debut album Alter Boy and 2010 social media viral follow-up 8Bit Heart and official paid-for album R∆ in 2011.
