Drawing us in with subtle crowd noise and a dimensional, bright, almost 8-bit adjacent soundscape, don’t get lemon open Paid Holiday with situational prose as they share the lyrics, “He said there’s more to life than contentment, a house and dog and never worrying about rent, he said he wants to know when it’s his time to be off his nut in the sweet sunshine…”

The narrative driven approach to songwriting is immediately captivating, and we appreciate the sonic nod to Forever Young by Alphaville. There is a playful retro energy that manifests, full of charm and nostalgia.

Layered harmonies add an immersive depth to the track, which essentially reflects the restless tension between comfort and freedom. The band capture the sentiment of someone caught in existential drift. Through these images of Spanish vacations, fleeting pleasures and imagined futures, Paid Holiday contrasts stability (a house, a job, a family) with impulsive escape (sunshine, travel, sensory euphoria).

Beneath the track’s humour and self-realized nature lies a melancholy recognition of how temporary satisfaction can be. This high emotional quotient really does manifest and lingers with us. The instrumental solo allows for more introspection and brings to life the track’s cinematic allure, which is perfect for a coming-of-age movie, perhaps something like Incoming or Do Revenge.

We learn that don’t get lemon is a Texas-based trio. There is no doubt that this sleek and emotionally charged single turns the quiet frustration of modern suburban life into something stylish and deeply resonant with shades of Blur‘s Damon Albarn and Alex Cameron.

The trio features Austin Curtis on vocals, Bryan Walters on bass, and Nick Ross on synth, guitar, and drum programming, with additional vocals by Claire Virginia, mixing by Ryan Santos Phillips, and mastering by Paul Gold. It is being released via à La Carte Records (2025).

We have added Paid Holiday to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of don’t get lemon, including Blow-Up and their 2024 album, Have Some Shame.
