Establishing the mood with cerebral laughter sounds from an audience, a static vinyl texture and metallic percussion, Until They Burn Me open Dead Water and the Seeds of Despair with intrigue. The opus expands with a hypnotic Django-inspired manouche guitar riff and airy risers.

The layered soundscape evokes notions of alternative folk with a dark-Americana vibe. We appreciate the subversive textures and dynamic nuances that keep us enthralled throughout. There is an undeniable cinematic allure to the piece, which we could see landing a sync placement in American Horror Story, or a TV show like True Blood. It would also work well in a Gus Van Sant or Sofia Coppola film.

The vocal growl details add even more drama to the piece, whilst astral melodies invite us in to a liminal space. The piece closes with a full circle moment, making the track ideal for repeat listens. We could imagine it being played at Cirque Gitane, also known as the rooftop of Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood, where songs of this nature often find their home.

Speaking on the release, Until They Burn Me confess, “Dead Water and the Seeds of Despair is a tribal summoning; a theme for aligning frequencies and tuning vibrations for the falling of the sky. Intended to conjure strong, cinematic imagery, the song is unique, engaging and compelling.”

We learn that Until They Burn Me is comprised of artists Cody Carlyle and Travis Jordan. Whilst the band was officially established in 2021, Cody and Travis have shared a musical journey spanning three decades, previously performing together in The Dry Season.
