Establishing the mood with a cerebral and dramatic synthscape with astral nuances and brooding bass tones, Cosmic Anxiety open The Crack in My Heart with notions of subversion but also a meditative allure.

The opus expands with atmospheric vocals as Cosmic Anxiety share the prose, “The crack in my heart, it consumes, it devours, it offers no truce, it offers no respite…”. We are immediately captivated by the poetic prowess, the vulnerability and the cinematic energy that manifests. There is no doubt that the track would be perfect for a multitude of sync placements, perhaps a Sofia Coppola film or a Luca Guadagnino picture, but also a scene set at The Bronze in the upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer continuation.

The dark-wave 80s adjacency is sublime, and the cohesive tapestry of sound that comes to life feels warm and cathartic. Speaking on the release, Cosmic Anxiety confess, “The Crack in My Heart deals with the everyday struggles of modern society, the facade, the politeness, the alienation, and ultimately the disappearance of humanity. It’s a plea for humanism.” They consciously add, “We started this band as a therapy and maybe it will end revolutionary.”

The sonic stripped-back moment mid-way through the piece, reminds us of Roads by Portishead, and other 90s trip-hop iconic bands like Massive Attack. It invites introspection based on the mundane references in the lyrics. It’s moody and yet thought-provoking. The message feels highly zeitgeist in the face of so much global turmoil. The creators say, “We are definitely influenced by the late 80s, 90s and Y2K, but we try to find a modern turn.”

Cosmic Anxiety is comprised of Eli and Gasher, former members of the band Clash Clash Bang Bang, with Eli on drums and Gasher on e-violin and e-guitar. After their previous band split in 2025, they formed Cosmic Anxiety, a synth-focused project that emphasizes hands-on instrumentation and jamming, particularly using the Synthstrom Deluge. We learn that The Crack in my Heart was created in a single evening at Studio Ganymed in Berlin.
