Establishing the mood with breathy and atmospheric vocalizations, Neon Palace opens Closer with a subversive, pulsing bassline and a delicate delivery of the lyrics, “Walked in, knowing why I came, didn’t dress like this for anyone else, found you through the noise somehow, felt the room begin to slow…”

We are immediately enthralled by the narrative that is unfolding, and the relatable nature of the prose. There is a definite cinematic allure that manifests with the track, which would be perfect for a movie sync placement like the upcoming sequel of Jennifer’s Body, or an episode of Euphoria on HBO.

We love the minimalism of the production, but also the pristine sound and vocal design. The ad-libbed harmonies are sublime and we can imagine that fans of Billie Eilish, Addison Rae, FKA Twigs and Massive Attack would be able to connect with what Neon Palace is delivering.

The sensual dark electronica vibes feel fresh and hypnotic overall. We learn that Neon Palace is a new arrival from Ireland, intentionally introducing a sound that stands apart from the current landscape.

Closer takes its time, letting each sound settle naturally. The idea of slowing down feels really important and zeitgeist today, and this is what the track offers and brings to life. Nuanced sound design elements keep us hooked whilst the overarching sentiment invites us to breathe and connect with each other.

Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Closer to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we stream Neon Palace’s debut single, Signs, and anticipate future releases from the innovative Irish electronica project.

Establishing the mood with a dramatic strings arrangement, expanding with a dimensional beat and Middle Eastern melodic riff, Layla Kaylif opens Closer with the evocative lyrics, “Closer than a jugular vein is where your jealousy fights with reason, closer than a heartbeat is the language of your lies…”

We connect with the whispered lines, the assertive message and the dynamic pop sound that manifests. Layla reminds us of Janet Jackson‘s Velvet Rope, Hole, and also Madonna‘s Papa Don’t Preach. It’s brilliantly produced and there’s a cinematic allure that manifests as the track explodes into an alternative rock energy with epic guitars showcasing Layla Kaylif‘s genre expansive energy.

As for the message, Closer is a poetic exploration of emotional intensity, jealousy and spiritual conflict. It is a raw confrontation with the darker side of love and human connection. Layla Kaylif examines how desire, envy and vulnerability coexist within intimacy. At its core, Closer is about the dangerous beauty of getting too close to another person, to truth and to oneself.

We learn that the song was co-written and produced with longtime collaborator Greg Fitzgerald. For some background, Layla Kaylif is an English–Arab singer-songwriter and filmmaker. Her music is designed to blend poetry, pop and cinematic storytelling.

After studying Arabic at Oxford University, she signed with Edel Records and released the international hit Shakespeare in Love, which became BBC Radio’s Record of the Week and a Top 10 success across Southeast Asia.

Following her award-winning work in film, Layla Kaylif returned to music with Lovers Don’t Meet (2020) and the poetic single God’s Keeper (2024/2025). Closer marks the first single from her upcoming 2026 album, which is set to bring about a darker, bolder sound! We cannot wait to hear it, and in the meantime, we have added Closer to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist!

We previously featured Water Street as they shared a soulful and poignant commentary with Afraid of Forever, so when we heard that the band was back with Closer, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience!

Establishing the mood with a playful electric guitar riff, expanding with horns, drums and bass into a vibrant and robust power-pop, blues-rock hybrid energy, Closer opens with a high emotional quotient and an intentional message.

In essence, Closer is about finding connection and letting oneself open up to the notion of new possibilities. It tells the story of meeting someone who feels right and learning to surrender to that sentiment.

The upbeat rhythm and soulful energy are designed to mirror the excitement of falling into something real. It feels hopeful, warm and full of life – something that we all need right now – a reminder that love and trust truly begin when we stop holding back!

Speaking on their influences, the band confesses, “The song is influenced by Lake Street Dive, Couch and Lawrence. Water Street drew from those influences featuring female vocals and catchy melodies backed by horns, but with Water Street‘s signature electric guitars and throwback feel of 80s rock.”

We learn that Closer stands out as the first single from Water Street’s upcoming fifth album and their second collaboration with Philadelphia indie label Free Dive Collective. It was intentionally created to manifest a new era in the band’s sound, blending their signature electric guitars with a vibrant horn section, giving the track a bold and soulful vibe, capturing both nostalgia and evolution!

Naturally, we cannot wait to hear the album, but in the meantime, we have added Closer to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Water Street!
