Our obsession with Clare Easdown and her band The Cunning Linguists cannot be contained. We have previously featured a slew of Clare’s incredible songs, as well as BURN THE SWASTIKA, and A SONG FOR elon by The Cunning Linguists, so when we heard that they were back with FUCK YOUR THRONE – Lo-Fi, we were curious to say the least!

This time, The Cunning Linguists return with fire in their veins. Their name alone is a wink to wordplay and wit. It’s cheeky, and perfectly fitting for artists who wield language as a weapon. Clare Easdown and Jade Ryan make statements, and loud ones at that!

FUCK YOUR THRONE opens with a cerebral guitar line and subversive energy. This leads us to Clare’s voice – atmospheric, haunting, deliberate. “You built your throne on silence and lies,” she sings. It’s minimal, though it pulls us in like gravity.

As the track builds, metallic tones creep in. The sound distorts and bites. Suddenly, we are in the midst of a full-bodied rebellion – a wall of grunge-tinged noise, and a call to arms disguised as a song. The sound evolves and mutates, but staying true to their ethos, it is art as activism. Raw and authentic punk, albeit reimagined through a digital lens.

The band confesses, “We wrote this track in response to the growing gap in society between filthy rich billionaire’s and the rest of society. The rich are getting richer. the poor are getting poorer and we wanted to capture this notion in our track FUCK YOUR THRONE. We love DIY music that is completely original and created from scratch and we wanted to adopt this exact approach for this Lo-Fi release.”

It ebbs and flows, its tension building and releasing in waves. Clare’s singing floats back between defiance and despair, perfectly aligned with the recent NO KINGS marches, whilst Jade’s guitar scythes across the mix like a protest sign painted in distortion. It’s unpolished by design. Every imperfection breathes honesty. Every lull is a heartbeat before another sonic punch.

FUCK YOUR THRONE is a stance. Anti-capitalist, anti-apathy, anti-monarchy – and unapologetically loud. Influences from Amyl and The Sniffers, Bikini Kill, and the Riot Grrrl movement echo throughout, yet The Cunning Linguists manifest their own electric sermon.

We have added FUCK YOUR THRONE to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Clare Easdown, and The Cunning Linguists, and anticipate future releases from the visionary activists.

Establishing the mood with an intimate piano featuring brooding chords and astral keys, Clare Easdown opens In Candlelight with a cinematic nature as she sings the title of the track followed by poetic prose with reference to the current war-torn nature of our planet.

The emotional quotient is high, anthemic drums guide us forward as Clare Easdown shares her delicate, ethereal timbre, loaded with an intentional message of love and peace, at a time when we need it the most. Clare is unafraid to use her art as activism. She is an artist that is not only connected to the zeitgeist, but offer her art as a tribute to the universe.

The lyrics of In Candlelight are powerful, and we really appreciate the production style. It is haunting, yet captivating. Speaking on the release, Clare confesses, “The story behind In Candlelight can be framed as a fusion of urgent global awareness and deeply personal conviction. The seed for In Candlelight was planted in the shadow of endless news reports – graphic videos on Tik Tok, families fleeing war zones, children caught in the crossfire. From Ukraine to Gaza, Sudan to Yemen, the kist of active conflicts felt overwhelming, yet the world seemed to scroll past them in silence. While working alone on my lounge suite early this morning, I lit a candle and started to create In Candlelight.”

The star continues, “The flicker of the candle became a symbol – fragile yet persistent, like the human spirit under siege. That moment crystalised my purpose. To create a song that would hold space for grief, rage, and hope all at once. The track was shaped by my personal belief that music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a vehicle for empathy and change. I wanted In Candlelight to pierce through apathy, to remind listeners that war is never abstract – it’s happening to people just like us. Every beat and vocal layer was built with urgency, as if the song itself were a protest march, a vigil, and a love letter to peace.”

Naturally, we are extremely moved by the song. It is important and brings us to tears with its message. We live in a time where many of us feel hopeless in the face of these adversities, so to have an artist like Clare Easdown share her perceptive and soul through music feels refreshing and important.

On her influences, Clare adds, “Specific artists who inspired this release are Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries with their beautiful track Zombie which was inspired by the 1993 Warrington bombings in England. PJ Harvey, for her raw, fearless storytelling and ability to confront political and social issues head-on. Massive Attack for moody, trip-hop- infused atmospheres that carry weighty subject matter, and Sevdaliza for blending vulnerability with a haunting, cinematic landscape.”

We can feel these influences manifest on In Candlelight, but it is also clear that Clare Easdown is creating a conscious sonic universe of her own – filled with intentional depth and a spirit in the music industry that we desperately need more of! We have added In Candlelight to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TIMELESS playlist.

Rebel Hearts by one of our favourite rising artists, Clare Easdown, is a defiant and introspective anthem that invites us into a space of raw self-expression, where imperfection becomes a badge of honour. The track begins with a cerebral vocal design, drawing us into an immersive energy that feels at once intimate and expansive. Easdown’s ethereal roots are still very much present, but they now coexist with a bold pop-punk flair – a new and exciting direction for the artist. The rebellious spirit of punk seeps into every note and lyric, not only expanding Clare’s sonic identity but also embodying the core message of the song: rejecting societal norms and celebrating individuality.

The layered vocals, with their vintage texture, create a multidimensional soundscape that feels both nostalgic and radically fresh. Creative ad-libs like “fuck the norm, fuck the system” reverberate with a sense of urgency, capturing the zeitgeist of a world where authenticity is increasingly commodified, and rebellion is, ironically, rare. Easdown challenges that rarity, offering her music as a rebellious beacon for those who feel disillusioned by societal pressures.

Easdown’s self-produced and self-mastered approach further underscores the ethos of Rebel Hearts. Recorded at her home in Menai, Sydney, the track embraces its imperfections. Timing, pitch, and even the rawness of the recording feel deliberate, conveying an unpolished truth that highlights the human side of music. In a culture that often values hyper-produced, flawless art, Clare’s decision to lean into imperfection feels like a radical act of defiance in itself, reinforcing the song’s message: that art, like life, doesn’t need to be perfect to be powerful.

Lyrically, Rebel Hearts empowers us to step into our authentic selves, especially in a world that thrives on conformity. The conscious message is clear – freedom lies in the courage to defy expectations and live outside the boundaries imposed by society. The song, with its political and personal overtones, becomes a rallying cry for misfits and non-conformists, creating a safe space for those who feel left out or marginalized. In this way, Clare Easdown not only provides an anthem but also a form of musical refuge, where embracing your flaws and celebrating your uniqueness is the ultimate form of rebellion.

The song’s punk influence is unmistakable, paying homage to legends like Bikini Kill and Fugazi while maintaining Clare’s unique sound. This infusion of punk ethos into her ethereal origins feels like a natural evolution of her artistry, making Rebel Hearts both familiar and groundbreaking.

In the end, Rebel Hearts is more than just a song; it’s a movement. It’s an unapologetic declaration that we don’t have to fit the mold, that we don’t have to be perfect, and that embracing our individuality is not only liberating but necessary. Clare Easdown’s fusion of punk defiance with ethereal dreamscapes leaves us feeling both empowered and challenged – challenged to question the norms that bind us and empowered to break free from them.

Naturally, we have added Rebel Hearts to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Clare Easdown, and anticipate future releases from the consciously astute star.

We have featured ethereal deity Clare Easdown for a slew of her previous releases, so when we heard that the star was back with STIGMA ENIGMA, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience with the world!

Setting the tone with the sound of rain and super atmospheric vocals with an accompanying synthscape, Clare confesses to her loneliness and perceived lack of understanding. These are not uncommon themes within Clare Easdown‘s wider artistic narrative, but the poignancy this time around, coupled with a highly emotional sonic architecture, feels vivid.

The visionary creator taps into a high emotional quotient for the release, sharing her soul with a personally created production, which actually manifests in a more authentic sonic journey in line with Clare’s message.

Speaking on the release, Clare tells us, “STIGMA ENIGMA is about mental health awareness and breaking down the enormous amounts of stigma around mental health today. It’s a song about having more compassion, empathy and awareness around mental health and loving more and judging less.”

We appreciate the intentional depth that the star conveys with her prose and performance. Clare goes on to inform us, “I was locked away in a psychiatric facility against my will due to my mania flaring up as I have bipolar disorder. I was laughed at when sharing live footage from within the facility and since have been ignored by many people in my life.”

With reference to the avant-garde accompanying visual, Clare comments, “The music video is simply screen recordings of the footage I recorded when being locked away and the sad notion that people would laugh at me when I had lost my mind.”

There is no doubt that STIGMA ENIGMA serves as a raw and heartfelt plea to dismantle the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health. Despite progress, mental illness remains heavily stigmatized, entrenched in societal norms. This opus boldly confronts these barriers, aiming to shatter the walls of stigma that isolate and oppress.

We deeply connect with the intentional manner in which Clare Easdown creates, and the cinematic detailing within her self-produced opus is hypnotic. Fans of Sleep Token, Madonna, Grimes, FKA Twigs, CHVRCHES, Lana Del Rey, and INIKO will also be able to relate to Clare’s work. The vocal production is haunting and we are in awe of her heart-wrenching range. Naturally, we have added STIGMA ENIGMA to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream Clare’s wider discography, and anticipate future release from the visionary, Australian talent!

The genius and expansive nature of Clare Easdown never ceases to amaze us, so when we heard that the star had released a song called Scopolamine, which is a a class of medications, a tropane alkaloid known as Devil’s Breath, used to treat various medical issues like nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, and even muscle spasms – we were extremely curious to listen!

For context, we love how Clare Easdown often shines a light on mental health, and has a phenomenally relatable manner of sharing her most vulnerable emotions with us. Scopolamine opens with her signature atmospheric vocals and a warm synthscape as Clare sings her innermost feelings, likening a romantic connection to her “drug of choice”, and in turn allowing us to connect with the concept of the medication. Needless to say, we immediately adore the creative direction that the song is going in.

Speaking on the release, Clare confesses, “Scopolamine is a torn and shredded part of my heart draped into lyrics, melody and beats expressing my ever present sadness and knowing that I will most likely never hear or see the one that I love ever again.”

She continues with depth and authenticity, “It has been several years and after many manic and crazed attempts of trying to make contact I have realised what I want may most likely never come into fruition.”

We can feel the rawness that comes with the piece, but also how it has clearly been an exercise in healing and self-preservation to write, record and release the composition. The 80s drums are textured and immersive, bringing to life Clare’s pounding heartbeat in a high concept and visionary way.

Clare adds, “Scopolamine is a love song gone wrong, with a brutal, painful, longing rippling throughout its core. It is open heart surgery, expressing the notion that love is deeper than an abyss and can be as painful as falling into one too.”

The rising artist’s wisdom always generates such profound emotions within us, and we have naturally added Scopolamine to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Clare Easdown‘s growing discography.

Our obsession with Clare Easdown grows with every listen, so when we heard that the star had returned with I Break, following the success of her plea for radical change, NOT READY TO DIE which featured Grimes, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Setting the tone with luscious vocal textures and an enigmatic guitar soundscape, Clare Easdown sings the title of the track before sharing the introspective and metaphorical prose, “I break I shake, my soul is shattered at the bottom of a lake, I break, I shake, this depression has infiltrated my brain…”

Something we appreciate deeply about the artistry of Clare Easdown is her willingness to bare her soul and deepest thoughts with us. This is what makes her art relatable and authentic – something that we find utterly mesmerizing.

I Break is no exception to this rule, and we connect with the immersive nature of the composition and the 90s grunge adjacent guitar riffs which create a cohesive tapestry of sound with Clare’s ethereal vocals.

Speaking on the intentional nature of the release, Clare confesses, “[I Break offers] empathy and self-expression to those who have experienced the debilitating nature of depression and mental health disorders of all kinds.”

She continues, “This track gives those who have felt like there is absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel an outlet, to be felt, heard and seen.”

We love the overarching message, and how it fits in seamlessly to Clare’s wider discography and growing body of work. We have added I Break to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Clare Easdown‘s top tracks, and anticipate future releases from the visionary artist.
