Drawing us in with an intricate piano performance, featuring a gentle and serene melodic energy, bass arpeggios and an almost glistening high note performance, Matthew Peter Gough opens Buttercup Field with notions of Spring.

We appreciate the poetic grace that Matthew Peter Gough performs with – the simplicity is calming and meditative, inspiring thoughts of seasonal growth and tapping into a grounded, Earth energy. Speaking on the release, Matthew confesses, “The melody to Buttercup Field came in the middle of the night and was quickly captured on a portable recorder by the side of the bed!”

He continues, “At that time the melody was sung, ‘Do you remember the buttercup field?’. Although the finished track is an instrumental, those words do briefly feature in the video. There is a field that is covered in vivid yellow buttercups each year. The video for the track was filmed there. The melody had a slow, hypnotic feel, similar to a ’round’, so repetition was the key to the vibe of the track. It builds slowly adding subtle orchestral elements like, violins and flutes, simulating birdsong, butterflies flittering or hares jumping. The listener can imagine being in the Buttercup Field, perhaps recalling memories of their own.”

We appreciate the orchestral elements that come to life mid-way through the piece, and the cinematic allure that they evoke. The shimmering finale feels optimistic – at a time when we, as a society, need it the most.

Matthew Peter Gough hails from Frinton-on-Sea, England, and we learn that the composition was written, recorded and produced entirely by Matthew in his seaside studio. The single launches his new project The Piano Field, leading up to an album in Spring 2026.

Known for his lullaby work, this marks a bold shift into expressive, cinematic piano music. Released via Rectory Records, the piece is designed to blend his serene style with more intricate orchestral layers, highlighting his evolution as a composer.

Naturally, we are in awe, and have added Buttercup Field to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Matthew Peter Gough, and anticipate the release of The Piano Field!
