We have been intently following the unveiling of Backstrom‘s incoming album, The Carousel, and recently featured his evocative and inspiring debut single, The Journey, as well as the fierce and empowering new single, Animal. Both songs are created in collaboration with Bart Topher, so when we learnt that the pair had also released, Train Wreck Coming, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Establishing the mood with an alt country guitar soundscape, Backstrom and Bart Topher open Train Wreck Coming with a sense of nostalgia and descriptive prose as Bart sings, “There’s thunder crashing and the rain is pouring down, you should look for shelter, but you’re heading out…”

We immediately connect with the vocal harmonies from Singtrece, and the poetic and philosophical prowess of the lyricism, before the opus expands with the instrumental mastery that we have come to expect from this record.

Our connection with the song is once again heightened when we hear Bart’s plea for mercy on our souls. The creators invite us to hold onto our faith, and the overarching message of the song becomes abundantly clear.

We are reminded of a potentially darker future for humanity, and invited to manifest a more conscious destiny. This is what we love about Backstrom – his intentional creative output is beyond tangible, and if it comes with an epic guitar solo like Train Wreck Coming does, then we are fully on board!

Speaking on the release and his collaborators, Backstrom confesses, “The instruments for this single were recorded in Buenos Aires by Fransisco Paz in his studio. Then we added the vocals with American singer Bart Topher and great harmonies from Singtrece. Gabe Wolf did the mix and mastering.”

We recently featured rising Swedish producer and musician, Backstrom when he teased his upcoming album, The Carousel, with the debut single, The Journey. As we continue to explore the lead up to The Carousel later this month, we wanted to also featured Animal, which was also created in collaboration with Bart Topher.

Enticing us with a roaring strings arrangement, Backstrom opens Animal with a fierce and dramatic energy, with layered harmonies from Kimberly Faith as she sings, “The animal that you have always been…”

Bart goes on to deliver the opening prose, “There’s a beast in the heart of the quiet, there’s a lion in the mind of every man, and when you’re pressed beyond the flesh, you’re the animal that you have always been…”

What we love about this project is the conscious depth that is shared with the lyricism. It is clear that Backstrom creates with intention and tangible wisdom. The journey of Animal is thought-provoking, and we adore the pizzicato strings as well as the luscious vocal harmonies.

Speaking on the message of the song, Backstrom simply says, “It’s about the inner animal in the modern human being…” There is no doubt that fans of Leonard Cohen will be able to connect with the opus, but also fans of Disney movies and musical theatre.

Drawing us in with soft drums and a vibrant guitar soundscape, producer and song creator Backstrom, along with vocalist Bart Topher, open their collaborative single, The Journey, with a sense of timelessness and intrigue.

The opus expands with a country-hybrid energy and philosophical prose as the creators remind us that “the real journey happens inside…”. We appreciate the thought-provoking nature of the lyricism, and Bart Topher‘s evocative and captivating vocal timbre.

The composition itself showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery, and Backstrom cites Johnny Cash and The Rolling Stones as sonic influences, which we can feel come through in his soundscape, although from the conscious nature of Backstrom‘s lyricism, it is clear that the rising artist is manifesting a sound of his own.

Speaking on the message of the song, Backstrom confesses, “It’s about hanging in there in tough times and whats important in life.” We appreciate the wisdom that Backstrom imbues with his words.

With reference to his creative process, Backstrom tells us, “First, I made a demo and then I let musicians add their instruments and vocal to it. So it’s basically homemade, but from a lot of different homes. In the end, I let Gabe Wold mix and master it, [whilst] Tommy Jones helped out with the English lyrics.”

We learn that The Journey is the debut single from Backstrom‘s album The Carousel, set for release later this month. The record features Bart Topher as vocalist for eight songs, whilst Fransisco Paz plays all drums and percussion, Luca Giannotti shares his guitar skill on the “folkier” songs and also some bass, and Kimberly Faith performs harmonies on six of the songs!
