We last featured Audren when she shared a timely and poignant philosophy with her vibrant single, Smile, People Smile!, so when we heard that the star was back with another exclamation point punctuated track called, We Want Funkey!, we had a feeling that we were in for another inspiring treat!

We Want Funkey! opens with a super dimensional funk-infused guitar and bass soundscape, expanding with textured drums and vibrancy. The production is epic and immediately uplifting before Audren shares ethereal vocals and a choral ad-lib.

The prose is punctuated with electric guitar motifs that fans of Prince would be absolutely obsessed with. In line with the title of the track, there is also a definitive nod to Wild Cherry. The brooding male vocal ad-libs create dynamism, and the message of the track invites us to dance, raise our hands to the sky and lift our booties.

Overall, the track is a lot of fun – bringing us an unrivalled, high energy optimism that we need in the 2020s, especially with so much turmoil in the world. This is sonic alchemy, and Audren is channelling her witchy magick into high vibrational funk.

Audren says, “I love dancing anywhere, in my bedroom, in the street, in the meadows. Dancing is like smiling; it puts me in a good mood even when the world is bleak and gloomy. We’re so desperately in need of happy moments right now that, after my last single Smile, People Smile!, I had to release another joyful song, full of sunshine, togetherness, love and happiness.”

We learn that Audren enlisted top funk bassist Federico Malaman, known for working with George Benson, Al Jarreau, Wilson Pickett, and Kid Creole, to elevate the track’s global sound. Additional contributions came from Christian Martinez’s horn section, Mike Rajamahendra, and Chris Rime, who also mixed and mastered the track.

We have been intently following the rise of Audren, having recently featured the thought-provoking and consciously introspective single, We’re All Lost, as well as the evocative, When Freedom Dies, and the cinematic single, A New Page, so when we found out that the witchy-conscious-baddie was back with Smile, People Smile!, we were curious to say the least and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in her universe once again.

Drawing us in with textured, rolling drums and a funk-adjacent guitar soundscape, Audren opens Smile, People Smile! with a narrative and a captivating vocal timbre. She shares her wisdom with poetic prowess and intentional understanding. She reminds us not to wait in frustration, and just “smile” as “smiling makes you feel good.”

On her creative process, Audren confesses, “I wrote this song after some difficult months when everything went wrong, I started to believe that Murphy’s Law was more than just an Al Jarreau song. I felt cursed. I was unable to find a single solution to all of my problems. I had lost hope and stamina. I needed joy so badly! I was standing alone, facing my mic, talking to myself: “Come on! Smile, Audren, smile! You’re gonna be fine”… and Bam! The song popped out!”

The instrumentation is sublime, the bass riffs, and horns add dimensionality, punctuating Audren’s conscious message. We learn that the intention of the crowd noise and laughter is to create a feeling like you’ve just walked into a party where everyone is happy and wants you to join. Audren tells us, “Sometimes I smile without even feeling happy yet it instantly puts me in a positive mood. It gives me the strength to tackle our disrupted world, and it makes my life lighter.”

There is no doubt that the message of the song is super important, now more than ever. Many people are living in a sunken place, we are surrounded by turmoil, wars, and low vibrations, so to keep one’s head up and just smile, and accept reality for what it is and see the optimism in life feels almost radical. That is what Audren brings to the table as an artist, and we are grateful to her for this. Once again, Audren and her producer Rime have created a healing song that stays in our heads because it is well made and generates a positive feeling.

Many studies show what Audren says in just a few words: smiling makes you feel good. Smiling releases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which improve our mood and help our bodies to relax. A smile also shows confidence and ability – even to yourself. It is proven to increase creativity and productivity too.

It kicks of with a meditative frequency and cerebral melody, expanding with pulsating drums and Audren‘s captivating vocals as she sings, “In a forest on a mountain, you hear the crowd from the top of the world, better stay where you are…”

The opus evolves with an incredible showcase of Audren‘s range and poetic prowess as she conveys her conceptual mind and philosophical depth with us. Drawing us in with an intricate acoustic guitar soundscape with a pulsating energy, Audren opens A New Page with descriptive prose as she paints a vivid universe with the words, “Over the willows, the clouds are dancing, over the meadows, the birds are singing over and over again…”

The opus expands with a luscious string arrangement as Audren shares a message of renewal and emotional healing. Essentially, the song shows us nature as symbols of peace and rebirth. These images reflect Audren’s desire to let go of pain and start over. This feels unique to her own experience, but also expansive and a clearly universal message, reminding us of the great beauty of planet Earth and how we have the chance to manifest protopia.

Establishing the mood with an intricate, descending guitar melody with a subtle pulsating bass, Audren opens The Good Road with philosophical, metaphorical and celestial depth as she sings, “Have you been a waterfall, are you somehow magical, do you like to lose control? Have you been a morning dew, dropping diamonds on the ground, will you make my dream come true?”

Needless to say, we are hypnotized by the creative songwriting, the consciousness that manifests, and the universal introspection that Audren brings to life with her message. The guitar performance is sublime, punctuating the prose with astral ostinatos.

The layered vocals and gospel nuances add dynamism to the already cosmic piece, and we appreciate the self-realized intention. The appearance of an organ for the middle eight is sublime, adding a high emotional quotient to the piece. We could imagine the song being played on the roof of Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood, where these psychedelic songs often find their home!

In essence, the song is about hope and belief in better times. Audren asks questions about someone special, imagining them as magical, strong, and full of light. She sees this person as someone who can bring joy, guide them, and make their dreams come true.

Audren confesses, “My main goal in life is to heal and uplift people, giving them food for thought through music and books. The Good Road, an indie pop / soft rock song, with a dash of gospel, is about finding our way back to some joyful life by trusting people and poetry. We’re a waterfall, a secret night, a golden sound like dewdrops on the ground. We definitely can change the world around.”

It also reflects on struggles and challenges in life. The lyrics mention losing faith, feeling like “puppets on a string,” and losing good things. Despite this, Audren believes in the power of love, poetry, and connection to help find the right path again.

Ultimately, the song is about returning to happiness and safety. The Good Road symbolizes a place or time where life feels balanced, warm, and secure. It reassures that even after difficulties, they will find their way back to peace and hope.

On her songwriting process, Audren confesses how she cried when writing it – this is often the result of a universal download, and how the best and most authentic songs in history are written. Audren recalls, “A gigantic nostalgia suddenly popped out while I was composing and writing the lyrics of The Good Road. I cried a lot and realized that, within a few years, I had lost so many good things: a part of my capacity for wonder and, most of all, the ability and possibility to trust people. I wrote the song as a cry for help, a universal request for solidarity and support to help each other through transcendent experiences that inspire enchantment and add meaning to our lives. I believe nostalgia can help people appreciate the parts of themselves that remain steadfast, despite the passage of time. It can strengthen them and empower them to embark on new beginnings.”
