Immersing us with ethereal and melodic piano, antinode opens their new EP, Midnight Improvisations // Songs for a music box with an intricate vibe that organically expands in tempo delivering mastery of the instrument and an enigmatic listening experience.

The second track is A secret dance, which lends itself to mystery and a more enigmatic approach from our composer.

antinode is the musical project of Jarp, who has been comfortable in front of a piano for a very long time and is now diving into the world of electronic music production.

His creative intention is to explore the musical boundaries between ambient synthesised landscapes and neoclassical music, although this EP sees the piano as the protagonist of our journey.

Fratitude is the third track on the EP, taking a more playful turn before we experience Sad song for a music box, which takes an emotive minor turn where we recount our presence and the sadness and solitude that sometimes comes with the human condition. This is the longest track on the EP and keep us mesmerized and introspective. Frequencies build towards the end, that really envelope us.

Speaking on his influences, antinode cites Vangelis, Deep Forest, Dead Can Dance, Enigma and Mike Oldfield. On his creative process for this piece, he says “The Midnight Improvisation EP’s are recorded in one sitting and take about as long as it takes to listen to them. They are truly improvisations.”

When discussing his relationship to music, antinode simply said, “Music inspires evolution. Without music the world would be a stagnant quagmire – and who wants that?”

Our final experience on the EP is Tiny Smiles, which shows us quite a cute and playful side of our composer’s multi-dimensional mind.

We are grateful for this sojourn, and have added Sad song for a music box to our New Music Spotlight playlist, along with another antinode song that we discovered called Neosynthesis which is more electronic and features a more cerebral energy!
