We previously featured ALEJ for sharing his soul on the raw, resonant and relatable new song, Dancing with Another Man, so when we heard that the talented artist was back with Miami Boys, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his universe once again.

Establishing the mood with a cerebral frequency, a pulsating dance-pop beat, cosmic astral synths, and captivating vocal delivery, ALEJ opens Miami Boys with dark-pop allure. The narrative storytelling is great and the hook, “these Miami boys are full of shit…” is beyond memorable. The track radiates confidence, balancing tongue-in-cheek humour with polished, festival-ready production. It is clear that ALEJ is confidently stepping into his power.

We immediately connect with the razor-sharp lyricism inspired by real-life dating disasters. Miami Boys transforms awkward encounters and modern romance into a catchy anthem. The production fuses 80s synth-pop nostalgia with late-2000s electro-pop – it’s giving the male love child of Lady Gaga and Dula Peep.

We could easily imagine Miami Boys soundtracking a scene in Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bottoms, or Emily in Paris. Speaking on the inspiration behind the release, ALEJ explains, “We wanted to write a tongue-in-cheek pop banger about the nightmares of dating in Miami.” He continues, “Between a guy doing substances at the club as a ‘date’ to going over another’s house and only seeing alcohol (and nothing else!) in their fridge… all of this ended up becoming what would be Miami Boys and honestly unlocked this whole chaotic, colorful world that precedes this new era!”

ALEJ embraces a pseudo-theatrical, over-the-top artistic persona for the track that actually feels completely natural. Speaking about this new chapter, he says, “I don’t think I’ve ever had a release that sounded like nothing I’ve done before. The song is also the first that makes me embrace a more flamboyant and over-the-top persona… so I feel like the authenticity is there!” 

Drawing inspiration from icons such as Lady Gaga, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Taylor Swift, ALEJ continues to carve out a distinctive lane of his own. Produced by Dibs, whose previous work includes Melanie Martinez and Carly Rae Jepsen – we can imagine the track blasting through festival speakers on a summer evening.

Infectious expands into an immersive dream-pop energy with nostalgic 80s nuance, as ALEJ touches upon themes of love and the human condition.

Speaking on the meaning of the song, the rising artist from Miami says, “I wrote about the very moment I realized I liked someone and kind of getting caught up in the moment and confusion and chaos of it all. The song is basically describing my process of trying to put the pieces together and figuring out what’s real and whats not upon realizing that I liked this person.”

We appreciate the authenticity that ALEJ creates with, and the poetic depth of his lyricism. The soundscape of Infectious is dimensional and unique and we love the vocal production and echo details.

ALEJ cites Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, Troye Sivan and The Weeknd as his influences, although it is clear that the rising artist is creating a universe of his own.

We learn that ALEJ wrote Infectious almost two years ago when the pandemic was taking place. He says, “I felt that I needed an outlet to escape into. The whole concept for this album is mostly exaggerated and some song are even fictional stories that I created from my imagination.”
